The 2022 Acura MDX was redesigned to become new and improved. As a result, it skipped the 2021 model year. The luxurious Acura MDX is built to take on rivals like the Lexus RX and Infiniti QX60, but it has three potential drawbacks to consider.

Three potential 2022 Acura MDX issues

To clarify, we aren’t saying that the Acura MDX is a bad SUV. It has a lot of great qualities to consider. But according to Cars.com, there are three potential issues to consider before making your purchase.

But first, what’s new with the 2022 Acura MDX? It has a new look and shares its styling and technology with the RDX and TLX models. It has the same 3.5-liter V6 engine with 290-hp, but it’s now paired with a 10-speed automatic transmission instead of a nine-speed one.

1. The infotainment system is frustrating

The first potential 2022 Acura MDX drawback includes its fussy infotainment system. Despite being updated, it still doesn’t have a touchscreen. That feels pretty prehistoric. The primary way to control the system is with the use of a center console touchpad.

It takes practice, patience, and luck to get to the menu you’re looking for. Also, it can be a bit distracting while driving. The system can also be slow to respond and has tons of menus to flip through.

But on a positive note, it comes with a large 12.3-inch screen that’s nice and clear. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto now come standard, and it can be helpful to use the Amazon Alexa voice controls.

2. The third row is tiny

The Acura MDX still has limited passenger space in the second and third rows. The second row may be cramped for taller adults, but if they slide the seat all the way back, the third-row passenger will have almost no legroom.

Cars.com suggests that the third row should be for kids only, and if you have your MDX at full capacity, your passengers could be cramped together. There is 16.3 cubic feet of cargo space behind the third row and up to 71.4 cubic feet total.

It may be challenging to fit everyone and their gear. But the 2022 model has a 2.8-inch longer wheelbase, so it provides more space than before. Also, it may have a smoother ride.

According to Car and Driver, the Acura MDX has an improved cabin compared to the 2020 model. It has a more premium look and feel but still lacks a posh feeling compared to rivals like the Volvo XC90.

3. The fuel economy is just ok

The 2022 Acura MDX doesn’t have the best fuel economy. However, Car.com didn’t list the MPG they got during testing. The MDX gets an EPA estimated 19 mpg in the city and 26 mpg on the highway.

This is about average compared to rival mid-size SUVs. But the problem is that this model is slightly less fuel-efficient than its predecessor. SUVs are supposed to be improving their MPG instead of becoming worse. Also, the previous model had a hybrid powertrain, but the 2022 model might not have one.
