2020 has been one of the craziest years in history. In the midst of everything, GMC’s revealing of the Hummer EV nearly broke the internet, generating considerable buzz on social media. So who would have thought that the 2021 GMC Yukon, of all things, would have been involved in the “world’s biggest tweet”?

GMC has been going hard with its social media presence as of late, especially with the upcoming 2022 GMC Hummer EV supertruck. That’s why it’s so surprising that GMC’s marketing team used the 2021 Yukon full-size SUV in its biggest advertising stunt of the year.

What exactly went down in this bizarre marketing campaign, and will it give the 2021 Yukon the hype it deserves? Let’s take a closer look.

What is the ‘world’s biggest tweet’?

When GMC says it created the ‘world’s biggest tweet,’ it means the company quite literally made it on a dried-out lake bed.

Multiple drivers got behind the wheel of 2021 GMC Yukon and Yukon XL SUVs to create this work of social media genius. With the sandy lake bed creating the perfect canvas, the tire tracks spell out, “Live big. New GMC Yukon.”

GMC’s news site detailed the extensive planning that went into coordinating the event.

“More than 2,500 color-coded stakes were meticulously placed by hand into the ground, along with 110,000 feet of rope line to help guide our precision drivers ––since GPS was unable to provide the level of accuracy this task demanded. Not being able to erase any wrong tire marks also required intensive meetings with our precision drivers, including the planning of their “always driving forward” choreography. Because of the massive scale of the World’s Biggest Tweet, the only way to capture it in its entirety was by helicopter––at just above 12,000 feet.”

Since GMC has already gone big with its promotion of the Hummer EV, it seems only fitting that the brand becomes just as creative for its other mainstay models. The Yukon doesn’t suffer from lack of love from drivers, so it’s likely GMC didn’t want this year’s iteration to get lost in the shuffle.

Why did GMC use the 2021 GMC Yukon to make this tweet?

The Yukon, along with the extended-wheel-base Yukon XL variant, is GMC’s largest SUV. This behemoth seats up to eight passengers, and it does so quite spaciously. This family SUV gained even more space for the 2021 model year, so it truly does “live big.”

The standard 2021 GMC Yukon gained five inches to its wheelbase, while the Yukon XL gained just over four inches. This expansion resulted in a noticeable increase in third-row legroom and cargo space. Meanwhile, the luxurious Yukon Denali trim is loaded with premium features that’ll elevate the entire family’s driving experience.

The “world’s biggest tweet” campaign was a brilliant way to bring attention to the 2021 GMC Yukon’s roominess, which offers class-leading interior space.

The Yukon backs up its big-bodied design with outstanding capability. Its standard 5.3-liter V8 engine will get the job done for most drivers, as it delivers 355 hp and 383 lb-ft of torque. Meanwhile, drivers who need an extra kick can equip the available 6.2-liter V8 engine. This robust engine is the most powerful in its class, generating 420 hp and 460 lb-ft of torque.

GMC also added a third option for 2021, as the GMC gains an available 3.0-liter turbo-diesel six-cylinder engine. However, the Yukon still delivers poor fuel economy numbers across the board.

Is the ‘world’s biggest tweet’ a big win for GMC?

GMC’s latest marketing campaign generated buzz on social media for a vehicle that otherwise wouldn’t have been in the spotlight. Only time will tell if the “world’s biggest tweet” will fuel bigger sales numbers for the 2021 GMC Yukon or if it will just be a footnote in automotive history.
