The 2020 Toyota Camry got a recommendation from Consumer Reports for a few reasons including its improved fuel efficiency. The entire Camry lineup did very well in EPA testing. Car and Driver explained that the 2020 Toyota Camry is the most fuel-efficient non-hybrid car they’d taken for a test run.

How does the 2020 Toyota Camry do on fuel economy? What else prompted Consumer Reports to list it as a recommended car in 2020?

Improved fuel efficiency

The 203-hp four-cylinder engine in the 2020 Toyota Camry is paired with the new eight-speed automatic transmission. It’s a great combination for improved fuel efficiency. It pulled off 32 mpg overall which impressively matches that of the smaller Corolla.

And the same base four-cylinder engine happens to be one of the fastest in the midsize car class. The new eight-speed transmission isn’t perfect. The team at CR pointed out that you would experience some rough shifts with it. It can also get a little noisy once you hit 3,500 rpm.

There’s a less powerful hybrid version that gets a continuously variable transmission (CVT). It shifts smoothly and is a lot quieter overall than the combustion engine. The LE hybrid model gets an impressive 47 mpg without compromising acceleration.

The 2020 Toyota Camry also made CR’s list of most fuel-efficient cars for 2020. How much you’ll spend on gas is an important consideration when it comes to shopping for a new car. Since many are trading in older cars for ones with better gas usage, the CR list comes in handy.

Recommended by Consumer Reports

Giving it an 84 out of 100 total points, the CR team recommends for the 2020 Toyota Camry. They like its new sleek styling cues, advanced safety systems, great handling, and improved fuel efficiency.

To quell the critics that like to call Camry unexciting, Toyota improved its styling. With the styling update, it’s more likely to catch the eye. The new cabin design offers decent visibility and a nice wide driver seat with good padding for support no matter how long your drive.

In its eighth generation, the Toyota Camry is based on a newer global platform it shares with C-HR and Prius. It’s got a lower stance, a suspension that handles road imperfections, and it handles corners well. The Camry has always offered a comfy, smooth ride, and that tradition continues. It’s even better with the new model’s enhanced agility.

The 2020 Toyota Camry

The Toyota Camry is known for its reliability which makes it a solid choice for a family vehicle according to Car and Driver. The 2020 models are no exception.

It offers three powertrain choices so there’s something for everyone. The base four-cylinder engine gets great fuel-efficiency. There’s a V6 if you need more kick in your driving experience. The hybrid is environmentally friendly and gets 47 mpg.

The Camry may not have the dynamics of the Mazda6 or the Honda Accord with their more athletic configurations and turbocharged engines. But it handles very well and provides a capable ride. It’s also got lots of driver-assist features like adaptive cruise control, lane-departure alerts, forward-collision alerts, and more.

New for 2020, you can get the Individual Performance Option. It’s a Camry equipped by Toyota Racing Development (TRD) with retuned dampers held up by stiffer springs that take the height down by 0.6 inches. The option gives you extra chassis bracing, heavier anti-roll bars, wider, lighter wheels, it’s own exhaust system, and more. It has a distinct aerodynamic body kit and a red interior too.

If you’re looking for a midsize car with good gas mileage, the 2020 Toyota Camry should be at the top of your list. With its generous list of standard features, roomy interior, and capable handling, it has a lot to offer. That it’s one of the best in its class when it comes to fuel efficiency makes it hard to beat.
