In the auto industry, there are a few brands that seem to go head-to-head in a kind of vehicle-based rivalry. One such rivalry for many highway-commuting warriors is the Toyota Camry versus the Nissan Altima. For years, these two cars have taken turns besting each other in various areas and among the expert reviews. For this year’s models, there may be one clear victor. And it’s the 2020 Toyota Camry that seems to outshine the Nissan Altima.

Why these two cars are top contenders

Known for their prowess as reliable commuter cars, both the Toyota Camry and Nissan Altima deserve consideration. They both offer all-wheel-drive variations. Both midsize sedans steer effortlessly, hold four adults (and even a fifth if need be), and consistently deliver 40 mpg.

However, when it comes to this year’s models, the Camry may have inched ahead with a few noteworthy extras. According to U.S. News, the Camry ranks second in the class with an 8.5 out of a possible 10 score. The Altima ranks seventh with a 7.8. The experts also awarded the 2020 Toyota Camry the top honors for both 2020 Best Midsize Car for Families and 2020 Best Midsize Car for the Money.

The Nissan Altima has plenty to bring to the table

Some argue you won’t find a more comfortable ride than one behind the wheel of the 2020 Nissan Altima. Often known for its more upscale touchpoints and increased cargo space, the Altima doesn’t disappoint in comfort, style, nor convenience. You can choose from two very capable engine sizes, both offering a healthy mix of giddy-up and fuel economy.

The ride is gentle, and the price tags are well within the ranges of its competitors. However, there weren’t any significant upgrades to the Altima for 2020 as it was refreshed in 2019, and it shows. In a class this competitive, sitting idle at the design table for a model year means presenting an opportunity for another contender to come out ahead.

The 2020 Toyota Camry does it better

The Nissan Altima is good, but the Toyota Camry is better. It’s quite possibly one of the best midsize sedans you can buy today. It keeps up with the Altima in fuel economy, but it also offers the V6 engine option that outpaces any car in the class.

The Camry is loaded with more standard safety features and for 2020 has plushier cabin materials. In addition to its ability to top the best in class for families and for the money, the Camry gets higher marks in crash tests and safety too. It’s not just the opinion of one expert reviewer, either. In more than one review source, the Camry outshines the Altima this year hands-down.

Ultimately, it comes down to ownership preference

Both the Toyota Camry and the Nissan Altima are great cars and deliver on their promises in comfort, performance, and value. But to know for sure how you feel about this year’s models, consider test-driving both. Style preferences will play a role in your purchase as well. If the cargo room is your deal breaker, the Altima may have bragging rights. But for most everything else this year, including value, safety, and options, the Camry may be your best choice.

Parking either of these midsize sedans in your garage is a smart move. And they’re both comfortable places to be, especially if you commute or spend time running between family errands. In the end, this rivalry has a clear winner for 2020. The Toyota Camry comes out on top, though we doubt there will be a shortage of Nissan Altima models on the road either.
