The 2020 Ford Expedition is one of the best large SUVs of the year. The current Expedition is at the top of its class because of its robust power and standard tech. Its many offerings are why critics consider this SUV as the cooler alternative to a minivan.

A variety of critics, including Autotrader, rank the 2020 Expedition as the best full-size SUV. Ford’s latest redesign for the Expedition makes the SUV bolder and more efficient. And if you’re looking for one of the snazziest and safest ways to carry your family, the Expedition is a worthy choice.

According to road testers at U.S. News, the Expedition is one of the best alternatives to a minivan, especially if you value extra space. Like a minivan, the Expedition can seat up to eight people, and it has LATCH child-seat connectors in its second and third rows. However, the main thing to keep in mind is that the Expedition is far more expensive than a minivan, with a starting price of $52,810.

U.S. News describes the Expedition’s interior space as “monstrous” and that passengers will find each seat comfortable. Naturally, the Expedition also impresses when it comes to cargo space. With all seats up, U.S. News recorded 20.9 cubic feet of cargo space. With the back rows down, it expands to 104.6 cubes.

Driving the Expedition

The Expedition is a quick and capable SUV. Base models feature a 3.5-liter turbocharged V6 that generates 375-hp and 470 pound-feet of torque. If you opt for the top-tier Platinum trim, you get the same engine, but it’s tuned to make 400-hp and 480 pound-feet of torque. No matter which you choose, a 10-speed automatic transmission is standard.

In addition to its ample power, U.S. News also recognizes the Expedition for its fuel economy and max towing capacity. The Expedition has a fuel economy rating of 19 mpg overall, which is about average for the large SUV class. When properly equipped, this Ford can tow up to 9,300 pounds.

Generally speaking, the Expedition has a smooth ride quality. Although, it can feel a little rough as you encounter bumps in the road. Another thing to keep in mind is that a large SUV like the Expedition can be challenging to handle in tight driving situations.

Cabin comforts

The inside of the Expedition feels stylish and upscale.

You’ll appreciate the Expedition on the inside because it’s big and comfortable, and because you can make it as upscale as you want it. Standard models come with cloth seats and an eight-way power-adjustable driver’s seat. Available amenities on this Ford include faux leather upholstery, genuine leather, and quilted leather. Heated and cooled front seats and a heated second-row are available too.

The Expedition’s available tech features make it more likable too. It comes with many family-friendly gadgets, including a sharp infotainment system that consists of an 8-inch touchscreen, a wifi hotspot, Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto. Items like a rear-seat entertainment system and a wireless charging device are optional.

The Expedition’s long list of active safety features also makes it one of the safest large SUVs. Features here include forward-collision warning and lane keep assist. Ford’s MyKey system is standard, too, and contains an additional seat belt reminder.
