The 2019 Mazda CX-9 Is the Savvy Way to Get Some Of the Most Modern Features

There’s a lot of hype around the 2021 Mazda CX-9, and it’s understandable. The newest CX-9 has updated tech and amenities. But even so, a used 2019 CX-9 can save you some money without sacrificing too much.

While Mazda has a loyal fan base, I’ve noticed that many owners feel like the brand doesn’t go far enough with updates between model years. The CX-9 is a good example of this. Aside from the new 2021 Carbon Edition trim, you could put a 2019 CX-9 and a 2021 model side by side, and it would be hard to notice a difference.

Nonetheless, the slight changes between model years work to a savvy car buyer’s advantage in the used car market. Like the 2021 model, the 2019 CX-9 comes with a turbocharged 2.5-liter four-cylinder that produces 227-hp with regular fuel or 250-hp with premium gas. This Mazda also comes with a smooth-shifting six-speed automatic.

The CX-9 isn’t the best midsize SUV if you care about towing since it can only haul up to 3,500 pounds. That said, the Toyota Highlander and Honda Pilot are more impressive here. But if you are a performance-oriented buyer, the CX-9 wins out. The CX-9 is nimble and moves quicker than its figures indicate. It can go from 0-60 mph in about 7 seconds, and it can get up to 24 mpg overall.

Road testers at Car and Driver echo that the CX-9’s classmates can’t measure up to its same level of dynamic performance. This Mazda outclasses many of its rivals on the inside too. The CX-9’s performance, style, and cabin offerings are why Car and Driver named it the best midsize SUV of 2019.

The CX-9 can seat up to seven people comfortably across its three rows. One downside to its interior is that it only provides up to 71.2 cubic feet of cargo space. This figure is below-average for the segment. But if you’re the type of driver that values style over extra utility, the CX-9 is still a fine choice.

Base CX-9s will have cloth upholstery. You’ll want to explore upper-level trims to leather trimmings and heated seats. The top-tier Signature trim comes with Nappa leather and wood trimmings. You’ll also want to examine upgraded models that come with Apple CarPlay and Android. The 2019 CX-9 features either a 7-inch or 8-inch touchscreen.

One critique here is that this older model’s infotainment system isn’t as user-friendly as the new one on the 2021 model. Additionally, Mazda didn’t make its i-Activsense suite of active safety features standard until 2020. Some upgraded 2019 CX-9s will have advanced safety features such as automatic emergency braking and lane-keep assist.

According to Consumer Reports, the average price for a 2019 CX-9 ranges between $21,800 and $30,325. Tech lovers might have a hard time passing on the 2021 version. Still, the 2019 CX-9 holds up as an impressive used car.
