Saving with a used Toyota 4Runner is a smart way to save some money, has these long-lasting SUVs can make it over 300k miles. However, the trick is to avoid purchasing a used Toyota 4Runner model that’s a lemon, and the 2015 Toyota 4Runner has the highest risk of involving expensive issues.

The 2015 Toyota 4Runner could have problems

To determine that the 2015 Toyota 4Runner is riskier than other models, we referred to CarComplaints, where actual drivers report issues with their own vehicles. Also, the site includes complaints from the National Highway Safety Traffic Administration (NHTSA).

If complaints come from the NHTSA, it means that the issues are potentially dangerous on the road, and should probably be listened to. The NHTSA also conducts safety tests and determines highway safety regulations.

In recent years, the 2015 Toyota 4Runner has racked up more complaints than any other model, making it the riskiest used model to buy. Check out which common issues drivers had to face before making your purchase.

2015 Toyota 4Runner interior problems

One of the most common issues with the 2015 Toyota 4Runner involves interior accessory issues. Some drivers faced problems with their entertainment system, randomly freezing and rebooting.

Other 4Runner owners had the system reboot after 10 minutes of driving, and others only faced this issue when it was damp outside. Also, the system was challenging to get the Bluetooth work and often wouldn’t play music or pull navigation instructions from cell phones.

Some drivers had to deal with their power locks failing. Suddenly each door had to be manually locked and unlocked. Replacing the power lock actuator cost around $260 for the part at the time, meaning drivers had to pay that fee for each lock to be repaired.

2015 Toyota 4Runner engine problems

There are a few engine complaints about the 2015 Toyota 4Runner provided by the NHTSA. One of the most dangerous claims involved the 4Runner lurching forward. At lower speeds, it would suddenly accelerate.

Another driver faced having no acceleration at all. Sometimes hitting the pedal would cause a delay in acceleration, making it dangerous to pull out into traffic. Other times, stomping on the pedal wouldn’t help the Toyota 4Runner accelerate at all.

Other drivers suddenly lost acceleration. The engine would either slow down from highway speeds or shut off. One driver specially reported that they lost traction control as their 4Runner went into limp mode.

2015 Toyota 4Runner brake problems

A few people reported brake problems for their 2015 Toyota 4Runners as well. Some drivers had to deal with their Toyota 4Runner shaking every time they applied the brakes, and replacing the pads didn’t correct the issue. Many drivers had their brakes warp incredibly early too.

Another driver had their brakes completely released twice when they hit the pedal. They lost all braking capabilities until the pedals were totally released, and the pressure was reapplied. The electronic stability control system was also prone to randomly not working for other drivers as well.
