No one expects a 650-horsepower supercar to be cheap. With the announcement of the 2015 Corvette Z06 pricing, General Motors is actually lowballing another dream car in its segment. At $78,995 for the coupe and $83,995 for the convertible, the new Z06 is less expensive than the discontinued ZR1, though it delivers more power. Chevy’s new super ‘Vette also out-muscles the Dodge (FIATY.PK) Viper at a lower base price.
With the pricing of the Z06, GM delivered on several big promises it made during the development process. The C7 Corvette’s chief engineer told Autoblog back in January that any C6 ZR1 consumer (MSRP: $111,600 before destination charge) would be able to afford a C7 Zo6 ($78,995 after destination charge). Chevy also promised more thunder than the 625 horsepower and 635 lb-ft of torque the 6.2-liter supercharged V8 was estimated to produce. With a confirmed 650 hp and 650 lb-ft of torque in the 2015 Corvette Z06, that was another pleasant surprise.
In the end, GM produced its most powerful production car ever. Company officials were predictably enthusiastic in a statement about the Z06 pricing.
“The 2015 Corvette Z06’s performance and technical capabilities place it in the elite fraternity of supercars,” said Harlan Charles, the marketing manager for Corvette. Charles added the Z06 was “one of the most track-capable cars you can buy off the dealership floor and still drive it to work every day.”
Z06 buyers who want to push the Z06 can opt for the Z07 Performance Package ($7,995) that brings in Brembo carbon ceramic-matrix brake rotors and other upgrades for aerodynamics. While the convertible ($83,995 after destination charges) with the Z07 package will head north of $90K, it still comes in lower than the Viper.
Dodge’s V10 SRT Viper supercar starts at $102,485 before destination charges. With the Viper’s 640 horsepower and 600 lb-ft of torque, the 2015 Corvette Z06 has the Dodge supercar’s number on power specs as well.
Chevy has also improved upon the previous Corvette Z06 that delivered 505 hp along with 470 lb-ft of torque. That model had its MSRP set at $75,600. GM has produced a far more powerful ride without much of a price hike.
Other than the Viper, there are no realistic competitors for the Z06 among American carmakers, but that’s the point. GM believes it has a supercar world legends (European too) are made of with the new Z06. Priced below six figures with more power than the C6 ZR1, there is a lot to be said for the value of the Z06 in the supercar realm. American car patriots can’t do better, unless the pure brawn of a Shelby GT500 is on the menu.
