Texas Transport Dept Slammed by Grieving Grandparents After Grandson Killed in Hit and Run

A 24-year-old man was struck by a vehicle in Houston, Texas, when he went to check on passengers after an incident he was involved in. Unfortunately, his death has led his grieving grandparents to speak out, appealing to the Texas Department of Transportation to upgrade cameras to record incidents, since some of the cameras being used currently can only stream video.

According to ABC13.com, Sincere Barrette was hit just after 5 a.m. along the 610 Loop near the Galleria area. Houston police stated that Barrette was involved in a collision when moving onto the freeway shoulder.

Barrette’s family revealed that he got out of the vehicle to check on the occupants of the other car when he was hit by another vehicle that didn’t stop. The driver involved in the hit-and-run incident has not been identified yet.

Barrette’s grandparents, Lawanna and Lorick Jeffery, were mourning the loss. Lawanna stated that Barrette was only trying to help when he stepped out. She said:

“He hit the car and went to make sure they were OK.”

She revealed that a phone call from the coroner was the worst conversation she has had over the phone. She said:

“The coroner’s office called, and it is the worst conversation or five-minute phone call anybody could get in this world.”

Barrette’s grandparents have called for improvements in road safety, especially for the installation of traffic cameras that actually record footage, which can be used to trace accident suspects, because the current cameras only stream footage for the police for monitoring purposes.

The Texas Department of Transportation acknowledged that many of its traffic cameras stream live feeds but do not record video.

Lawanna stated that if the incident had occurred in New York, the suspect would have been caught by now since the cameras record everything. She stated:

“I’m from New York. In New York, our cameras record everything. If this had happened in New York, he would be in jail. Because this is a crime scene.”

Barrette’s grandparents had a message for the driver who hit their grandson:

“Whoever hit my grandson – he has a mother, father, and sister, plenty of friends. He’s a good kid.”
