I tested the No. 1 hybrid in America for driving range and I wasn’t disappointed

The Toyota Camry goes all-hybrid for its new generation. And, even with a midsize sedan footprint, the Camry stretches its legs further than just about every other hybrid out there. Thanks to its 13-gallon tank and 51 mpg combined maximum, the most disciplined of Camry drivers may be able to manage over 660 miles of range from the now all-hybrid affair.
The new Toyota Camry steps things up with 663 miles of uninterrupted driving range– if you can drive carefully
For those who lament the passing of the Camry TRD’s almost unnecessarily peppy V6, the new hybrid-only Toyota sedan might make up for it with its dainty thirst and surprising comfort. Toyota says the new Camry (in its base trim) will manage as many as 53 mpg in the city and 50 at highway speeds.
Mind you, my review car was a deceptively sporty XSE AWD trim, complete with eye-popping red seats and a growly Sport Mode. Picking the new Toyota Camry at the XSE AWD trim will drop fuel economy to closer to 44 mpg, and that’s if you can stay out of the Sport Mode and away from the paddles.
When I did, my average fuel economy wasn’t far off from the EPA estimates. I averaged a little over 40 mpg while driving on stop-and-go surface streets and overburdened highways. At the base trim, the LE, the new Camry will return as much as 51 combined mpg. Paired with a 13-gallon tank, the Camry is good for up to 663 miles of driving range. Not too shabby.
I know what you’re thinking. “But wait, the Toyota Prius, the biggest name in hybrid-dom, manages a whopping 57 mpg combined. Surely that’s better than the new Toyota Camry’s 51 mpg.” Ah, you’re correct. The Prius can squeeze that much more mileage out of every pricey drop of fuel.
Granted, the Prius is more efficient, but it has a smaller fuel tank. But the Prius also works with a smaller fuel tank, 11.3 gallons to the Camry’s 13-gallon capacity. As a result, the base 2025 Toyota Prius LE can muster around 632 miles of set-it-and-forget-it driving. That is, if you can keep your right foot light and your driving discipline in check.
The same goes for the new Toyota Camry’s perennial rival: the Honda Accord. A 2025 Honda Accord Hybrid EX-L will manage around 614 miles of driving range, well shy of the base Camry’s 663-mile figure. Like the Prius, the Accord’s tank is a bit smaller, if only just. But the Accord’s three fewer combined mpg limits its long-haul range.
