For some reason, it’s easy for people to forget that Tesla is an American auto manufacturer. However, the company started its life in California and has production plants throughout the country. Though there are now overseas factories building and distributing Tesla vehicles, the company’s roots are right here in the U.S. In fact, you might be surprised by just how American-made Tesla vehicles really are.

According to Market Watch, Tesla took the top spot for the most American-made manufacturer for the second year in a row. Each year, Cars.com puts together a list of the 10 most American-made vehicles. For 2022, the top 10 list sees an unprecedented four Tesla vehicles.

The Tesla Model Y sits in the number one spot, while the Model 3, Model S, and Model X also make the list. For those not keeping score, that’s every Tesla model currently in production. That’s a pretty impressive feat, considering outsourcing parts from different countries often nets cheaper build prices.

Market Watch states that this list takes the places of production as well as how many components of the vehicle are sourced from U.S.-based companies. Tesla has been mass-producing EVs for a decade now. However, the vehicles only recently made this list thanks to Elon Musk’s desire to keep manufacturing data under wraps until recently.

Tesla sales continue to skyrocket, too. The company continues opening new “Giga factories” to meet demands. However, CEO Elon Musk claims that they are losing billions of dollars thanks to the huge production facilities.

This does put an interesting perspective in the ether for electric vehicle naysayers, though. After all, nothing stimulates the U.S. economy more than supporting American companies! Why not support the most American-made car manufacturer there is?

Chevrolet and Ford are surprisingly absent from the list

You’d expect to see things like the Chevy Silverado, Ford F-150, or Dodge Challenger in the list of the most American-made cars. However, none of those vehicles make the list.

In third place, the Lincoln Corsair makes an appearance. Given that Lincoln is a Ford-owned company, it does save face for one of the most recognizable American brands a bit, there. Additionally, the Jeep Cherokee also makes the list, putting Chrysler on the map. However, Chevrolet vehicles are entirely absent from the list.

Perhaps the most surprising brand appearance to some, though, would be Honda. Honda matches the four-slot high score of Tesla with the Passport, Ridgeline, Odyssey, and Pilot. All of which Honda builds in the U.S. Additionally; Honda does what it can to use American-sourced components when building its vehicles on U.S. soil. That way, they’re not only providing jobs to U.S. citizens but helping to stimulate the economy of the customers who buy the company’s vehicles.

If you think that Tesla and Honda topping the list of the most American-made vehicles is a bit surprising, keep scrolling down. There’s a whole helping of foreign-branded vehicles being produced right here in the United States. Some of the ones that make the list may surprise you!
