“Made in America” is a bit of a misnomer when it comes to cars. Even the “most American” cars with final assembly within the United States are no more than three-quarters North American components. Tesla, however, dominates the American-Made Index for the fourth year in a row. And the brand’s cheapest EV takes the top spot.

The Tesla Model 3 leads most of the brand’s lineup among the ‘most American-made cars’ of 2025

Tesla’s brand image may have changed for a huge number of American car buyers. But that doesn’t change just how American the controversial brand’s EVs are compared to the rest of the market.

Cars.com has been ranking the cars with its “American-Made Index” for 20 years. For the last four years, however, the top spots have all shared one common factor: Tesla. The Tesla Model 3 tops the list of the most American cars, followed by the Model Y, Model S, and Model X.

All four EVs roll off the line at Tesla’s factory in Fremont, California. But the Model Y, the best-selling vehicle in the automaker’s lineup, also has a home at Gigafactory Texas alongside the Cybertruck.

It’s not just the two-decades-old Cars.com index, either. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) American Automobile Labeling Act (AALA) details the percentage of North American components in each production vehicle. And Tesla? Well, the electric automaker unsurprisingly took top spots among the most American cars by materials.

For instance, the Model 3 Long Range registers as 75% North American parts, 20% of which are sourced from Mexico. The Model Y comes in just behind the Model 3 at 70% North American parts. In comparison, the Ford F-150, a perennial favorite of the American vehicle buyer, shows just 45% North American componentry.
