Tesla Cybertruck owners are dealing with stalker cars and Elon Musk protest projections on their tailgates
Tesla owners are paying for the public image of the brand’s eccentric, even divisive CEO, Elon Musk. From nationwide protests at dealerships and showrooms to threats of damage and vandalism, Tesla drivers are a target for anti-Musk protests. Most recently, stalker cars with projectors are following Tesla Cybertrucks to broadcast messages on the hulking EV pickup truck’s wide, flat tailgate.
Anti-Elon Musk protestors are following Tesla Cybertrucks to project messages on their tailgates– and they aren’t positive
A Tesla Cybertruck pulls up to a set of stoplights. It is followed by a car, a stalker sedan just feet behind the controversial electric truck. Now, the Cybertruck is a frequently noticed and recorded car. After all, it’s massive and angular to the point of science fiction. However, that wasn’t the reason a bystander filmed this particular Tesla Cybertruck.
No, the vehicle behind the Cybertruck took advantage of the EV’s wide, flat surface on its tailgate to project messages about Elon Musk and the Cybertruck itself. At one point, the projector illuminates the bare-metal look of the tailgate with “MUSSK.” However, instead of a matching font throughout, the “SS” resembles the SS insignia of the reviled Nazi military unit from WWII.
Next, the projector throws a detailed image of Elon Musk’s controversial gesture at the 2025 Presidential Inauguration, namely the one that resembles the “Heil Hitler” salute of the Second World War. Then it was the truck’s turn for some criticism. “Tesla Cyber-Truck,” it read. “The most recalled truck of 2024.” Ouch.
In all seriousness, 2024 wasn’t a good year for Tesla owners regarding recalls. The Cybertruck had seven recalls in 2024. Moreover, the EV automaker issued recalls for 5,137,968 vehicles, more than Ford or any other brand on the market.
However, the projector-based protests aren’t highlighting the Cybertruck’s production flaws to spite the model. Instead, the messages are meant to impact Tesla CEO Elon Musk by creating a stigma around the brand’s vehicles. Fortunately, these protests are peaceful.
Earlier in the month, a student organization in California threatened to “physically damage” a large number of Tesla vehicles if the owners didn’t sell or trade their EVs. Like the messages projected on the tailgate in the video, the student organization cites an anti-Nazism rhetoric. In a manifesto it sent to a California news outlet, the organization calls Musk a fascist, sexist, and misogynist.
