Tesla Cybertruck Becomes Only Pickup Truck to Win IIHS Top Safety Pick+ for 2026

When the Tesla Cybertruck first rolled into the industry with its brutalist, stainless-steel design, critics were incredibly quick to label it a potential safety disaster. Pundits argued the sharp angles and massive weight would make it a danger to both pedestrians and passengers. But the official numbers are finally in, and the skeptics have been firmly silenced.

As recently celebrated across social media platforms, the 2026 Tesla Cybertruck has just been awarded the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) Top Safety Pick+ rating.

Even more impressive? It is the only pickup truck, electric or gas-powered, to earn this elite distinction under the organization’s incredibly strict 2026 evaluation criteria.

Beating the Toughest Crash Tests

For a vehicle to earn the “Plus” designation from the IIHS, it has to be practically flawless in a crash scenario. The Tesla Cybertruck achieved the highest possible “Good” ratings across the board in the small overlap front, updated side, and the notoriously difficult updated moderate overlap front tests.

To get these perfect marks, Tesla’s engineering team implemented crucial mid-year structural updates to the front underbody and footwell of the newer models, drastically improving the safety cage’s ability to protect the driver and passengers during violent frontal impacts.

Protecting Pedestrians (and the Competition’s Pride)

One of the biggest concerns regarding the Cybertruck was its tall, flat front end. Many assumed it would be an absolute nightmare for pedestrian safety. However, the IIHS tests proved that advanced technology can outsmart brute physics.

  • Pedestrian Crash Prevention: The truck’s standard Collision Avoidance Assist system earned a “Good” rating. Relying entirely on Tesla’s vision-based camera system, the massive truck successfully avoided or mitigated collisions in both daytime and nighttime scenarios involving child and adult crossing dummies.
  • Headlight Performance: Strict IIHS rules require highly rated headlights across all trims to win the Top Safety Pick+ award. The Cybertruck’s signature LED lightbar and low beams met the stringent criteria, providing excellent road visibility without blinding oncoming traffic.

Why Are Other Trucks Failing?

Full-size pickup trucks generally struggle with IIHS safety ratings. Their massive size, traditional body-on-frame construction, and high ride height make crash energy management incredibly difficult. Several popular gas-powered trucks from legacy automakers failed to qualify for either IIHS safety award this year due to poor performance in side impacts or pedestrian safety.

The Cybertruck approaches safety from a completely different angle. Its heavy, floor-mounted battery pack gives it a remarkably low center of gravity (reducing rollover risk), while its 30X cold-rolled stainless-steel exoskeleton acts as an ultra-rigid safety cage that directs crash energy away from the cabin.

Combined with a 5-star overall safety rating from the NHTSA, the Cybertruck isn’t a dystopian sci-fi prop. It is legitimately one of the safest electric vehicles you can buy today.
