Trucks are a type of vehicle owners are often proud to drive. However, critics don’t always agree about which models are the best. Consumer Reports truck’s owner satisfaction score is pretty spot on based on current and previous truck owners’ thoughts. As far as full-size pickup trucks go, Consumer Reports thinks there’s only one terrible option owners will hate, the 2022 Ram 1500 Classic.

What Consumer Reports’ owner satisfaction score means

Consumer Reports does an annual survey asking owners how satisfied they are with their vehicles. Moreover, it’s the easiest way to tell if owners are happy with their purchase or not. Usually, the vast majority is correct in whether or not your purchase will be satisfying. There are a few different things CR asks customers about in these surveys.

For example, driving experience, comfort, style, and value. Lastly, owners reveal whether or not they’d be interested in repurchasing the same vehicle. Furthermore, models that receive high owner satisfaction scores in previous model years usually carry them over to new models. For 2022, CR’s worst overall full-size pickup truck is also one it predicts owners will hate.

The 2022 Ram 1500 Classic has a terrible owner satisfaction score

First, predicted reliability and owner satisfaction are terrible for the 2022 Ram 1500 Classic. With the worst possible reliability rating, it’s surprising owners were slightly more satisfied than the truck is reliable. More specifically, 68 percent of owners claimed they’d rebuy the Classic. While that may seem high, it’s by far the lowest of every full-size pickup truck. For example, the best models, the Ford F-150 and Toyota Tundra, each had 78 percent of owners say they’d repurchase.

However, other categories aren’t terrible for the Ram 1500 Classic. The comfort and styling both rated at 85 out of 100, which is excellent. Additionally, the driving experience fell a few points short, rated 78/100. Lastly, the weaker Ram truck suffered in the value department. Customers said the price they paid was too high for what they got, landing the worst overall full-size truck with a 56/100 for value.

Positives and negatives of the 2022 Ram 1500 Classic full-size pickup truck

Overall, Consumer Reports thinks the 2022 Ram 1500 Classic is worse than owners say. It’s by far the lowest-rated full-size truck overall. A few things earned it such a low score, one being predicted reliability. While the full-size truck category isn’t filled with reliable models, the Ram 1500 Classic is as bad as it gets. Available since 2019, owners have reported issues with the fuel system, brakes, power equipment, and engine as frequent.

Next, fuel economy is abysmal, even for a full-size truck. While most customers aren’t expecting Prius-level gas mileage when buying a pickup, the Ram 1500 Classic is particularly bad. CR reported an average of 10 city and 21 highway mpg. Which, at a time when some U.S. states require $5 or more per gallon of gas, is not ideal.

Lastly, Consumer Reports doesn’t like that it’s outdated in a few places. The 2022 Ram 1500 Classic is the basic, outdated version of the luxurious and modern standard Ram 1500. However, that is also its downfall. There’s no assist system to ease the weight of the heavy tailgate, no steps to climb into the bed as most pickups offer, and it has a high entry height with no assist for climbing inside. For these reasons and more, CR thinks owners will hate the worst overall full-size truck.
