How much car can I afford?

Investopedia says that the average new car costs $40,000. That price may be higher if you’re buying an SUV. And if you’re buying a new luxury SUV, you can expect that number to be much higher.

As far as how much car you can afford, Investopedia has some advice. They recommend that no more than 10-15% of your monthly income be spent on your vehicle. That includes more than just your car payment. You have to take into account repairs, registration fees, and insurance

So what kind of SUV can you buy? It’s difficult to account for all the variances that occur with purchasing an individual car. Your credit score, the amount of money you’re planning on putting down, and even where you live can change your monthly payments. So let’s assume that you’re comfortable spending ten percent of your income on just your car payment. That leaves you five percent of room for the extras, or you can factor in a little extra for your monthly payment if you’d like.

We’ll also assume that you’re in the second-highest credit category, and that you’re taking out a 60-month loan. Here’s what you can get.

If you bring home $3,500 per month, you can buy the 2022 Hyundai Venue

Try to raise your credit score and save some money before you make a big purchase like a new SUV, that way you’re in the best position to buy.
