There’s a new Subaru Crosstrek on the way. Subaru of America announced today that the new 2024 Crosstrek will make its debut at the 2023 Chicago Auto Show on February 9. The Crosstrek is not only the cheapest new Subaru you can buy but the Subaru’s best-selling SUV. Any changes to this model need to be made carefully.

What will be new in the 2024 Subaru Crosstrek?

The new 2024 Crosstrek will be a critical vehicle for Subaru. For many, the Crosstrek is their gateway Subaru, the one that addicts people to Subaru models. Details are scarce so far on the new SUV. However, Subaru does say that the new Crosstrek will get more power (thankfully), new technology, and more safety features.

Subaru has released a few pictures of the new Crosstrek, and while it keeps its small proportions, it looks tougher. The new SUV gets extra body cladding on the front end and mirrors that updated Outback. Inside, the cabin should get a new vertical touchscreen when the car goes on sale in late 2023 in the U.S.

However, we hope that the new Crosstrek keeps one feature enthusiasts love: the manual transmission. The Outback is one of a dwindling number of cars that offer this old-school feature. Also, we’d love to see Subaru’s new plug-in hybrid drive added to the Crosstrek.

As we said, the Crosstrek outsells all other Subaru models. Much of why is because the Subaru Crosstrek is the cheapest way to step into a Subaru SUV. It starts at $23,645 and at that price, the Crosstrek comes well-appointed and with standard all-wheel drive and a frugal 2.0-liter four-cylinder. The Crosstrek also comes with Subaru’s STARLINK app, EyeSight driver assist technology, as well as standard Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. It comes in five trim levels and the Hybrid trim.

Step up to the Limited, which starts at $29,495, and you get a host of luxury features like leather-trimmed upholstery, 18-inch wheels, more safety aids, and power-heated seats. In the Limited trim, you also get a larger engine. But, it could be one of the most luxurious SUVs you can find for less than $30,000. The Hybrid, however, commands a premium at $36,845

The new 2024 Crosstrek can go off-road

We won’t go overboard and say that the 2024 Subaru CrossTrek is a Jeep Rubicon. But its lifted suspension with 8.7 inches of ground clearance certainly helps it romp over some trails. Also, all of Subaru’s SUVs come standard with all-wheel drive, which can help get you out of some muck. There’s no Wilderness trim, like on the Outback, but for most soft-road situations, the Crosstrek is plenty.

You can order a manual transmission for now

The other available transmission is a CVT, which in the Subaru is step-less and can be droning on the highway as it hunts for the right ratio. Regardless, the manual transmission makes it one of the few SUVs that is still offered with a manual transmission today. The Base and Premium versions can be ordered with a six-speed transmission. Of course, Subaru deletes the EyeSight software with the manual models because it needs to control the transmission to work properly. That’s one reason we fear the manual will disappear on the new Crosstrek.

Still, there are plenty of reasons to be excited for the new 2024 Subaru Crosstrek.
