Subaru is planning for risks that I didn’t even realize existed. The automaker is working on an idea to improve safety during EV accidents. By reducing one potential source of damage when electric vehicles crash, it could save lives. 

Subaru could use a deployable frunk to prevent people from getting electrocuted 

I often think about how safe cars are. But I never realized that you could be shocked by an electric vehicle during an accident. Now that’s a scary new thing to worry about as I proudly review electric models. 

But Subaru might have my back. The automaker thinks it could use deployable frunks that could reduce the shock risk during EV crashes. 

According to The Drive, a traditional frunk can damage an electric motor during a wreck and possibly shock passengers. Also, a frunk means frunk trunk. A lot of electric trucks and SUVs have them to provide extra space in the absence of an engine. 

During a collision, the frunk area could get crushed against high-voltage electrical components, harming passengers with brute force and electricity. 

But by adding a smaller frunk storage box that deploys from under the hood, a layer of protection could be added. Subaru has developed two designs that are removable and lockable. 

The device could add weight to the front of the vehicle or take up storage space. However, as more electric vehicles add heat pumps to the frunk to improve performance during the cold, most frunks are going out of style. 

Also, these ideas must be for future vehicles as the Subaru Solterra doesn’t even have a frunk!
