When people get insurance payouts for their SUVs, they usually aren’t stuck with monthly payments. However, one Jeep owner in Florida is still footing the bill for his totaled ride after Progressive sent out a check to cover his auto loan.

Florida man gets stuck with payments for totaled Jeep

We are gathered here today to mourn the loss of a Jeep that was taken too soon. Howard Welch, of Tampa, Florida lost his SUV during Hurricane Helene.

The SUV was flooded and declared totaled, but he still doesn’t have a new ride. To make things worse, his finance company is urging him to start making payments again, despite not having the destroyed vehicle.

Welch received $4,000 to eventually re-title the SUV for personal use. According to WFLA, Progressive sent a check for $14,902.92 to the finance company for Stellantis to pay off the auto loan. The check was dated on November 10.

Progressive provided a copy of the front and back of the check that shows the endorsements from Stellantis’ bank. Now, seven months later, Stellantis claims that it never got the check and demands for Welch to resume making payments.

He is facing $500 monthly bills while trying to connect Progressive and Stellantis to work things out. Welch can’t buy a new vehicle as he’s tied up in this mess. Without the title, he can’t register the Jeep either.

Welch shared that Stellantis representatives keep telling him to make payments. However, it seems like they don’t have the check because they already cashed it.
