Florida has long been battling against illegal street takeovers. But this weekend, the level of danger experienced by the public and the police protecting it reached another level. An unofficial meet in Margate quickly turned to chaos as it became more and more violent, resulting in a police officer being hospitalized after they were run over. Gunshots were also fired.
Last Sunday, the Margate Police Department responded to reports of a massive street takeover shutting down the 2900 block of Banks Road. They eventually arrived to disperse the crowds and break up the illegal gathering, but the situation was quick to spiral out of control.
According to official police reports, as officers attempted to break up the crowds, a fleeing vehicle struck one of the officers, running over their foot. In response, the officer withdrew his firearm and fired upon the vehicle. While the driver got away, the police have opened an investigation into finding the driver and any possible passengers they had.
The vehicle is yet to be found.
The officer involved was sent to North Broward Hospital to receive treatment on their foot. They are expected to make a full recovery. But the area where this took place is still reeling from the chaos. Resident Rita Barons told NBC6:
“I could see the bright lights. I heard the zooming up and down Banks Road with cars,” Barons explained. “I heard noise. I heard a helicopter flying over my house.”

Florida’s Crackdown on Car Culture Criminals
This kind of behavior is exactly what lawmakers in Florida are currently trying to crack down on. The illegal gatherings of cars have become a plague in the state, and reflect poorly on what is a beautiful passion for many within car culture. It has resulted in high levels of property damage, injuries, and even fatal incidents as drivers show off in their modified cars.
In 2024, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis made the choice to define the term of “coordinated street takeover”, enacting a strict law that increased the penalties of anything connected to it. This includes huge fines for those involved and even jail time. This, as you’d expect, includes anything involving drag racing, stunt driving, or purposefully blocking public roads and intersections.
As this weekend proves, these things can quickly get dangerous. The Florida Department of Law Enforcement is expected to take over the investigation started last weekend—something that is standard protocol after the discharging of a police weapon.
