A couple in Houston, Texas, who chose to remain anonymous for their protection, saw their 2003 Dodge Ram pickup stolen from their business last week. Their Dodge has a tracking device, which allowed the couple to find it in an overgrown lot just off of a main road.

The two used a drone and found several presumably stolen Dodge trucks in an overgrown lot—some stripped to the frame, others still drivable. Their truck sat damaged with several parts missing.

Once they confirmed their truck was there, they called the police. A 911 dispatcher told them the police would need a warrant to enter a private lot, and the process could take “hours.”

Within the 24 hours they waited by the property, they noticed suspicious activity. People came and went, and two Dodge trucks were driven off of the lot.

“It’s frustrating. We could have saved somebody’s truck. There were two other trucks that were perfectly fine, but they drove off with them and those owners aren’t going to know what happened to (them),” the woman told ABC 13.

It took six days to get their Dodge back

Police said they secured a search warrant after 12 hours. Six days later, the couple filmed officers towing several Dodge trucks from their property, including theirs.

Thieves stripped all key components from the truck. The seats, the engine, the transmission, and most of the wiring.

“It was pulled apart,” she said, standing next to her totaled truck. “It’s a total loss.”

While they wait for insurance to tackle the mess, the couple said they felt slighted by the police’s delayed response.

“We think we’re safe out there. If we see something, we should say something, but at the end of the day, if we see something and the cops don’t show up, it’s nothing,” she said.
