A 54-year-old South Carolina woman told a judge that she doesn’t want another lawyer appointed to her. But this is no simple crime of theft or reckless driving. No, this was a driver leading police on a high-speed chase in a rented U-Haul truck and killing two people in the process.

A South Carolina woman is representing herself after firing yet another attorney following a deadly police chase in a U-Haul

Bad decisions are a bit like pack animals. You don’t often find them alone. Take this instance, for example. A South Carolina woman has chosen to represent herself in court after authorities charged her with multiple counts of reckless homicide during a deadly police chase. See? Bad decisions in multiples.

Margie Brown was driving a rented U-Haul truck when police officers with the North Charleston Police Department tried to pull her over. Brown refused to stop, leading the police on a chase and hitting speeds of around 70 mph.

Police say they discontinued the pursuit after chasing Brown through town, per Live 5 WCSC. Even still, Brown drove the U-Haul against traffic, ultimately striking a Mercedes-Benz. The impact pushed the luxury sedan into a nearby Honda motorcycle, and pushed the little Honda into a Chevrolet Tahoe.

The impact left one of the motorcycle passengers dead, along with another fatality and five injuries. Now, Brown faces charges of reckless homicide, two counts of hit-and-run, and two counts of failure to stop for police. But here’s the kicker: she’s fired yet another attorney and is choosing to represent herself.

‘I wouldn’t represent myself if I had these charges’

A recent video shows Brown charging into court and firing her fourth and latest attorney. “I hope y’all heard that. He’s fired! I haven’t heard from him in 48 days!” she yelled at the cameras in the courtroom. She then informed South Carolina Judge J. Cordell Maddox that she didn’t want another appointed attorney and that she would be representing herself.

“What I want is the evidence that the state has,” Brown yelled at the judge. “That’s what I want. I don’t want another attorney who’s going to look at the video and then tell me I can’t see it, and I’m still in the same boat.” Needless to say, the judge voiced his disagreement. “I don’t think you should, but I don’t see any constitutional reason that you can’t,” Maddox added. “I just think it’s dumb.”

She disputed the charge of hit-and-run, saying she was “arrested at gunpoint, then on body cam, at the scene of the crime.” Who knows what her cunning plan to fight charges related to her utter recklessness resulting in two deaths, though.
