Toyota Recalls Corolla Cross Hybrid Over Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard Violation

The quiet hum of a hybrid vehicle is often a welcome feature, but what happens when a car becomes too silent for safety? Toyota is now addressing this very issue, announcing a recall for thousands of its popular Corolla Cross Hybrid SUVs due to a fault with the pedestrian warning system.

Why Is Toyota Recalling the Corolla Cross Hybrid?

Toyota Motor Engineering & Manufacturing has issued a safety recall for certain 2023–2025 model year Corolla Cross Hybrid vehicles. According to the notice filed with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, these vehicles may not produce a sufficient warning sound when driving in reverse.

This puts them in violation of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard number 141, which sets out the minimum sound requirements for hybrid and electric vehicles.

The purpose of this feature is to protect pedestrians, particularly those who are blind or have low vision, who rely on the sound of an approaching vehicle to stay safe.

“Insufficient pedestrian warning sounds may fail to alert pedestrians of a reversing vehicle, increasing the risk of injury,” the report reads.

The fault lies in the vehicle’s software, which fails to increase the volume and frequency of sound when put into reverse.
