Shouldn’t your driving experience offer you a way to have a bit more fun? Acceptable driving dynamics turn sporty when you opt for the 2022 Ford Edge ST instead of one of the lower trims. This Ford SUV bends toward the sporty side of things while giving you enough utility to make it useful. Can you find the quality, experience, and drive you want in this midsize SUV?

The midsize crossover SUV segment is changing so rapidly that the Edge might lose its edge in the market. This SUV has been around since 2015, with an update in 2019. If you’re looking for the right SUV to drive in this class, other models, such as the Jeep Grand Cherokee, have been upgraded more recently.

The 2022 version does add impressive features to this SUV

For 2022, Ford gave the Edge some added items that can make your decision a little easier. This model now has:

  • Standard AWD
  • Black Appearance Package
  • Adventure Package
  • New paint colors: Flight Blue, Forged Green

The list might be small, but adding these packages, which offer mostly cosmetic improvements, and giving this SUV AWD on every model can make a huge difference.

What engines power the Ford Edge?

All models of the Edge that are not the ST trim are powered by the same engine. MotorTrend tells us this is a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder model mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission. This powertrain is good for 250 horsepower and 280 lb.-ft. of torque. The fuel rating is 21 city/28 hwy, giving you a relatively efficient midsize SUV.

Choose the Ford Edge ST, and you’ve got sporty power for the drive. This trim gives you a 2.7-liter twin-turbocharged V6, making 335 horsepower and 380 lb.-ft. of torque. This engine uses the same transmission, and the fuel rating reaches 19 city/26 hwy mpg.

How safe is the 2022 Ford Edge?

The latest version of this Ford SUV has earned a five-star safety rating from the NHTSA. That is the highest rating a vehicle can earn. The IIHS lists the Ford Edge as a Top Safety Pick model.

To achieve these ratings, the Edge has an excellent package of safety features. These include blind-spot monitoring, automatic emergency braking, rear cross-traffic alerts, lane keep assist, and adaptive cruise control.

Sync 4 keeps you entertained in this Ford SUV

You’ll see a 12.0-inch touchscreen with Sync 4 connectivity in every model of the Edge. This gives you a large display screen and brings Ford’s fastest infotainment system. You’ll have the benefits of natural language voice recognition, a navigation system, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, two USB ports, and a six-speaker audio system. An upgraded 12-speaker Bang & Olufsen audio system is available if you want crisper sound quality and more speakers.

The two-row midsize SUV market isn’t large. The Ford Edge ranks fifth among eleven models reviewed by Consumer Reports. The Nissan Murano, Chevrolet Blazer, Toyota Venza, and Subaru Outback are rated higher than the Ford Edge in this comparison.

The Ford Edge is one of the sportiest SUVs in its class, as long as you choose the ST trim. If you’re not going to drive the top ST trim, you could look to one of the four models just mentioned and experience the qualities that put them ahead of the Edge.
