It’s surprising how often police officers get sent flying through the air! I wonder if going airborne is included in training programs. While a New York cop was making a traffic stop, he was hit by a semi-truck. The impact sent him over the guardrail.

New York semi-truck driver crashes, sending police officer flying

A routine traffic stop in Schenectady, New York quickly escalated as a police officer was sent flying over the guardrail. Luckily, grass and shrubbery made his landing a little softer.

It all started when a state trooper decided to stop a Honda Odyssey around 12:39 PM on Interstate 90, west of Exit 26 in Rotterdam. As the officer approached the passenger side of the van, the driver of a semi-truck lost control.

The truck slammed into the squad car, causing it to hit the Odyssey. Then the van hit the officer, sending him flying through the air, up and over a guardrail. According to Syracuse, the officer landed down in an embankment and called for help.

Witnesses could see the mangled cruiser on top of the flattened guardrail. The rear end was crushed, the hood was damaged, and the airbags deployed. Also, the Odyssey was pulverized.

The police officer was taken to Albany Medical Center for serious injuries that were non-life-threatening. The driver and passenger of the Honda were transported to St. Mary’s Hospital in Amsterdam with minor injuries.

Police officers would like to remind drivers about the Move Over Law. It’s not optional. Lives depend on motorists to slow down and move over if they see an emergency, police, fire, or highway crews on the shoulder.
