A semi-truck driver in Washington hit another semi-truck full of apples on Wednesday. The crash sent fruit flying everywhere and shut down the highway for 8 hours.

The Kennewick semi-truck driver was believed to have been distracted when he crashed into the trailer full of apples near the Rock Island Dam. The semi was heading west on Highway 28, according to Washington State Patrol, when it crossed into oncoming traffic on the rural two-lane highway.

Washington State Trooper Jeremy Weber told the Tri-City Herald that when the semi hit the tractor trailer hauling apples, it knocked the trailer and the cab onto its side.

A Washington State Trooper reported live from the scene of the apple disaster

“I’m at the scene right now of a two semi-truck collision, which is partially head-on, and it’s causing the driver to be transported, while the other one is minorly-injured and is staying at the scene,” Trooper Weber said in a video posted to social media.

“As you can see, one of the semi-trucks is on its side, and it’s completely lost a full load of apples, which creates a huge mess,” he continued. “We’re going to have to clean that up as well as get the tow trucks out here.

“So, just want to advise anybody that’s stuck in traffic right now, please turn around and go the other direction. I know that it’s backed up as far as I can see. So, we won’t be getting out of here anytime soon. I would imagine at least five hours, so avoid the area at all costs if you can.”

Apples were strewn for 300 yards, and the highway was shut down by the accident. It took police investigators and cleanup crews eight hours to reopen the road. Drivers who came upon the scene were forced to circle back nearly 20 miles.

The semi-truck and trailer were totaled in the crash. The driver of the semi was reportedly treated at a local hospital. Investigators had not determined at the time of the report why the semi-truck driver was distracted.
