Saving With A Used Toyota 4Runner Isn’t a Bad Idea

Do you really need a brand new Toyota 4Runner? The 2020 Toyota 4Runner starts around $36k and hasn’t received many updates. Plus, a used Toyota 4Runner will probably last for years, because these SUVs don’t die.

Is a Used Toyota 4Runner worth it?

The top of the line Toyota 4Runner TRD Pro is the off-roading version, and it’s usually worth the risk of buying one used because they hold their value exceptionally well. According to iSeeCars, an SUV generally loses 51.6% over its value over five years, but the Toyota 4Runner only lost 36.5% of its value.

The 2017 Toyota 4Runner

By using CarComplaints to see what issues have been reported by owners about the Toyota 4Runner, we can easily determine which used model years are better options to buy. In recent years, the 2017 Toyota 4Runner has only racked up two problems.

One issue involved the brakes locking up, making the 4runner hard to stop, and the other issue involved steering issues where the Toyota 4Runner pulled to the side. No follow up was posted about these issues being corrected.

The 2017 Toyota 4Runner can be found for about $24k to $35k depending on which trim options you find and how many miles they have. It seems like the TRD Pro off-roading models are the most popular used models for sale.

The 2010 Toyota 4Runner

The 2010 Toyota 4Runner is another safe bet because it only has four complaints listed. The issues are for the radio not working properly, electrical issues, a steering problem, and one driver reported transmission problems.

In 2010 there was still a Toyota 4Runner Trail Edition, and it can still be found. Depending on which trim options you find and how many miles they have, you can snag a 2010 Toyota 4Runner for about $10k to $15k.

Now the 2010 Toyota 4Runner is an older model, but it still comes with a powerful V6 engine and the optional 3rd row of seats. It has a smooth and comfortable ride with excellent off-roading capabilities and can tow up to 5,000 lb.
