Routine LA Traffic Stop Escalates to Bomb Squad Call, Pit Bull Shot by Police Leaves Behind Puppies

A routine traffic stop quickly escalated to an emergency for the bomb squad after police found explosive devices in a car. While clearing the surroundings, a pit bull protecting her newborn puppies attacked and injured a police officer, prompting the officer to fire at the dog, killing it.

According to a report by ABC 7 Eyewitness News, the incident occurred on Monday at 1 a.m. near Telfair Avenue and Penrose Street, south of the 5 Freeway, when Los Angeles Police Department officers stopped a white sedan.

Upon searching the car, the officers found a suspicious package, reportedly filled with explosive devices. Sensing the potential for an explosion, the officers evacuated the surroundings, including those living in the area.

Eventually, the police stated that the package was safe and detained one person for questioning. Unfortunately, during the evacuation process, a pit bull attacked one of the officers, resulting in the officer firing at the dog. The dog died at the scene, while the officer was taken to the hospital. Lt. Bruce Coss said:

“During that evacuation, officers encountered a vicious dog which attacked one of the officers which resulted in an officer-involved shooting.”

The LAPD Will Investigate Both Incidents

The owner of the 5-year-old pit bull, Chankara Beshay, said that her boyfriend was in the process of evacuating the dog and her newborn puppies when the incident occurred. She said that the pit bull was being protective of her newborn puppies:

“I don’t know why… It’s hurting me so bad. And the cops are not giving me any answers. She’s protective but it’s different because she has puppies. You know how dogs get overprotective when they have puppies.”

Now, two separate investigations have been initiated by the LAPD. One will investigate the shooting of the pit bull, resulting in the dog’s death.

The second investigation will be conducted by the LAPD’s major crimes team into the package that was said to have explosive devices.

  1. I was a mailman for 30 years, never shot a dog, don’t know any mailman who ever shot a dog. Why is it that cops always go for their guns, don’t they carry pepper spray anymore or batons?
Killing a dog that may or may not bite you seems…..??? Overkill.
