When someone says “rooftop tent,” you probably picture a Subaru, maybe a Toyota 4Runner, or a Jeep Wrangler posed as an Overlander with one on top. And there are plenty of good reasons why—they give drivers the ability to sleep off the ground and away from critters and creepy crawlers without giving up the bragging rights of sleeping under the stars.

It’s glamping with the glam, even though many rooftop tents are priced as such. You’d be hard-pressed to find one under $700, while a traditional tent is much, much less than that. Be that as it may, Stellantis filed a patent for an in-house rooftop tent for the Wrangler that just may change the game.

Document diagrams show it would attach directly to the Wrangler’s frame points in the roof, no cross bars or roof rack needed. The images imply that when folded, there would be minimal height and weight added to the roof. Which, when off-roading, is very important.

Campers may be able to get inside the tent from the Wrangler’s interior

Other images show the Wrangler’s removable roof panels can be accessed and removed with the rooftop tent still on it, so campers can crawl into the tent without a latter (or without getting out of the Jeep).

Much to a camper’s delight, the entire tent doesn’t require manual labor to open or close. The patent wrote a dedicated electrical system can deploy and fold the tent with the push of a button.

Also, the electrical system isn’t just for the tent. The system can also be used to charge devices, power campy devices like an electrical stove, strings of lights, or heating blankets if you’re cool like that.

Images also depict a visor that comes out to give camper shade while on the trail, too. There’s no solid word on when production will begin or when Jeeple can expect it, but when it arrives, a lot of automakers will be feeling the pressure.
