Police officer reveals why you may not get a ticket for rolling stops
There are several reasons drivers get traffic citations. It could be due to speeding, illegal passing, or running stop signs. However, many wonder about the possibility of getting a ticket for committing a rolling stop. This is the case because it seems to be rare for police to conduct traffic stops when people inadvertently do this. A police officer recently took to his social media to explain why he doesn’t write tickets for the infraction.
It’s not unheard of for police to give a traffic citation for a rolling stop
Some people may not know what constitutes a rolling stop. In a nutshell, this is when a driver doesn’t fully halt their vehicle at stop signs. Instead, they slow down to an almost stop and roll through the intersection. While they’re still checking for oncoming traffic, this can still be seen as dangerous.
Recently, a Rhode Island police officer who uses the name of Csroka on TikTok gave his stance on getting a traffic citation for committing the offense. Notably, a viewer reached out and wondered how often he believes issuing a ticket for the offense is necessary. The officer, wearing his uniform, likens rolling stops to speeding and says it’s rare that people decrease their speed to 0 when they reach a sign.
He goes on to say that he typically lets rolling stops go because he’d prefer to concentrate on the drivers who are showing blatant disrespect for the law. He then brings up speeding again and compares it to how, as he said in a previous video, he will allow people to go 5 to 10 miles per hour over the limit and focus on the ones going significantly faster. Still, in the end, he says, “stopping means stop.” In other words, police officers can still conduct traffic stops and issue citations for rolling through signs.
