Trying to find a reliable SUV these days can seem like an overwhelming task. There are a lot of sport utility vehicles out there, but Consumer Reports rounded up some of the most reliable and fuel-efficient compact SUVs on the market for 2022.
The Hyundai Tucson starts off the list of fuel-efficient compact SUVs
The 2022 Hyundai Tucson is a well-rounded sport utility vehicle. As far as reliable and fuel-efficient compact SUVs go, the Tucson is at the top of the list. Consumer Reports gave this Hyundai SUV a score of 93 out of 100 overall. It also received the “green choice” and “recommended” labels. The predicted reliability and predicted owner satisfaction score were both above-average. Consumer Reports managed to get 35 mpg overall during testing. Plus, forward collision warning (FCW), automatic emergency braking (AEB) and blind-spot warning (BSW) are all included standard.

A fuel-efficient compact SUV ready for adventure is the Subaru Forester
The 2022 Subaru Forester is a satisfying mix of reliable and fuel-efficient. Subaru is known for its multi-tasking off-road capable compact SUVs, which the Forester delivers on. In Consumer Reports testing, the 2022 Forester returned 28 mpg overall. It also scored well in the predicted reliability and predicted owner satisfaction areas. Looking at the history of this sport utility vehicle, buyers can be assured it is a reliable and fuel-efficient compact SUV. FCW, AEB, and lane-departure warning (LDW) are standard, but BSW is optional.

The Toyota RAV4 Prime is a hybrid version of one of the best-selling sport utility vehicles
As far as reliable and fuel-efficient compact SUVs go, the 2022 Toyota RAV4 Prime checks all of the boxes. The RAV4 nameplate is known for reliability, as is the Toyota brand in general. The RAV4 Prime is a new plug-in hybrid version of one of the best-selling SUVs in the country. It gets 302 hp and can go around 40 miles on the electric motor alone. Once in hybrid mode, Consumer Reports got 34 mpg overall. The MPGe listed is 72 mpg overall. FCW, AEB, BSW, and rear cross-traffic warning (RCTW) are all included on the Prime.

The Honda CR-V is another fuel-efficient compact SUV option
Another hybrid option returning good fuel economy is the 2022 Honda CR-V SUV. During Consumer Reports testing, the CR-V returned 35 mpg overall. The standard gasoline powertrain returned 28 mpg overall, which is still respectable. This Honda SUV also did well on the road test and predicted reliability. The CR-V nameplate has also been around for many years and has a history of reliability. Honda included FCW and AEB standard on this fuel-efficient compact SUV.

Don’t forget the Subaru Crosstrek with high scores from Consumer Reports
Another fuel-efficient compact SUV option from the Subaru brand is the 2022 Subaru Crosstrek. Scoring an 86 out of 100 overall in Consumer Reports’ testing, the Crosstrek came in first on the list of subcompact SUVs. With 29 mpg overall and an above-average score for the predicted reliability, this Subaru SUV is a solid choice. FCW and AEB are included with the automatic transmission, but not with the manual. BSW can be added.
