Ever since Ford debuted its Ford F-150 Lightning electric pickup truck back in the spring of 2021, automakers have been announcing electric pickup trucks of their own. Electric powertrains have created new vehicle segments and more areas for competition in the automotive industry. Ford and Ram may rule over the full-size truck segment, but what about full-size electric trucks? Ford has made its electric addition to its lineup. Now it’s Ram’s turn.

The 2024 Ram 1500 EV is late to the party

Ford’s announcement and the debut of the Ford F-150 Lightning is historic because of where the automobile industry is headed in the years to come. The F-150 Lightning may seem like just another truck to some consumers, but it has changed the game. President Joe Biden publicly stated his ambitions for American automakers to electrify 50% of new vehicles by 2030.

Automakers are striving for a more conservative 40%, which would still change the market as we know it. Today, electric vehicles make up much less than 10% of the total new-vehicle market share in America. By 2030, electric vehicles will be ubiquitous, and many of the stigmas preventing consumers from buying the vehicles will be laid to rest.

Ford has led the charge, and Chevrolet recently followed with an electric pickup truck announcement of its own. The 2024 Chevy Silverado EV will be a Ford F-150 Lightning rival. Ram is also releasing an electric pickup truck for the 2024 model year, though few details have been released. According to InsideEVs, Ram is consistently making changes to its new electric truck to keep up with the competition. Stellantis CEO Carlos Tavares claims that Ram is making adjustments to the electric pickup every month.

Though the electric full-size pickup truck segment is still emerging, there are several electric pickup trucks that have already been teased, including the Tesla Cybertruck. The Rivian R1T electric pickup was the first electric truck to be available to American consumers.

The R1T makes 835 horsepower uses a quad-motor system. It has also proven itself to be a capable off-road vehicle by conquering Hell’s Gate in Moab, Utah. The Ford F-150 Lightning boasts impressive features like its mega power frunk with power outlets. Certain F-150 Lightning trims can even be used as backup generators for homes.

The Chevrolet Silverado EV RST is capable of driving for 400 miles before needing to recharge. It makes a massive 664 horsepower.

The Ram 1500 EV has to be special to compete in its vehicle segment

The 2024 Ram 1500 EV has to be impressive to compete with amazing electric pickup trucks like the 2022 Rivian R1T. Electric trucks are here to stay, and automakers have a chance to make a huge impact on consumers with the first electric trucks that they produce. Will the Ram 1500 EV be able to stand against its rivals, or will it be eclipsed by other electric trucks because of the lack of hype surrounding the truck?
