Fierce competitors in the half-ton truck world, Ram and Ford F-Series pickups are inching closer and closer when it comes to sales numbers. The F-Series used to dominate, but Ram pickups have slowly made their way to close to the top.

If 2020 numbers are any indication, Ram trucks may soon overtake its F-150 counterpart. With the sales of coupes and sedans falling off, SUVs, vans, and trucks are dominating American roads overall.

Ram pickup sales

Ram sales have surged in the past 3 years, and it is quickly catching up to its major competitor. According to, Ram sold 500,723 trucks in 2017, 536,980 in 2018, and 633,604 in 2019.

Compare these numbers to the Ford F-150 in the same years — in 2017 there were 866,764 F-150 trucks sold, in 2018 there were 909,330 sold, and in 2019 there were 896,526 sold.

Just looking at those numbers, it appears that Ford is still outselling Ram trucks by a large margin, but there are other factors to consider. First, Ford F-150 sales barely changed at all in the past 3 years, and in fact, in 2019 they went back down to 2017 levels. Compare that to Ram which has steadily increased over the same time period.

Ram is a real competitor

Compare the above data to where they started on this list that goes back to 2005. In that year, there were 400543 Ram trucks sold, and there were 901,463 Ford F-series trucks sold. So you can see that Ram started out with much lower numbers that have increased significantly over the years, while Ford started out strong and has stayed pretty steady.

If the above trends continue, it appears that Ram could one day beat the Ford in truck sales, or at least match it. 2020 is off to a very close start between the two brands.

In January 2020, Ram sold 41,836 units compared to Ford’s 60,595. In February, Ram sold 54,163 and Ford sold 78,449. Ram saw numbers drop off in the latest month we have figures for, March 2020, possibly due to world events, but Ford sales continued to rise.

The 2020 Ram

In 2020, they’ve pulled out all the stops. The 2020 Ram 1500 offers uncompromising strength, connectivity, and power, with an available 3.0 -liter eco-diesel V6 engine. If you need a lot of towing capacity, the Ram 1500 delivers with an available 5.7-liter HEMI V8 that delivers a towing capacity of 12,750 pounds.

The 2020 Ram 1500 has plenty of smarts to go with the strength. It has intelligent features to give you confidence while towing the big loads, as well as a suite of active driver-assist features that keep you safe and in control.

The model with available adaptive LED headlamps and optional crash prevention was named a 2019 Top Safety Pick+ by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety.

There are several unique and innovative features on the 2020 Ram trucks that drivers will appreciate. One of these is the available multi-function tailgate. The door splits 60/40 so you can open either side independently for more ways to access the bed. It also lets you keep your trailer hitch hitched while unloading the bed.

While the Ford F-150 has been the top truck in the U.S. for decades, the Ram is nipping at its heels. As of now, either truck could win top sales for 2020.
