Remember when $70,000 got you a 707-horsepower Hellcat? Now, Ram wants that kind of cash for… a hybrid. But this isn’t a Prius. The 2026 Ram 1500 Ramcharger is an EREV—Extended Range Electric Vehicle—which means it drives like an EV but carries a gas-powered generator to keep going indefinitely. With 647 horsepower, 14,000 pounds of towing capacity, and 690 miles of range, it’s arguably the most capable half-ton trucks Ram has ever built. But is the Ram hybrid worth the original Hellcat’s MSRP? The market will decide that.

More muscle than a TRX, more range than an EV

Edmunds reports that the Ramcharger makes 647 horsepower and 610 lb-ft of torque—numbers that put it close to the 702-horsepower Ram TRX than any regular half-ton truck. It also sprints to 60 mph in 4.5 seconds, which is faster than most full-size pickups. Unlike pure EVs, which struggle with towing range, the Ramcharger’s Pentastar V6 generator allows it to tow indefinitely—as long as you keep the gas tank full.

Car and Driver notes that the Ramcharger can go 145 miles on battery power alone, then switch seamlessly to its range-extending V6, giving it a total range of 690 miles—more than any EV on sale today. That’s 170 miles farther than the Lucid Air Grand Touring, which currently holds the record for longest-range EV.

The “new diesel” of the pickup world

Back in the ‘80s, diesel trucks were an inside secret—less flashy than a V8 but way more capable. The Ramcharger plays the same game today. It’s not the loudest truck on the lot, but it has the power to work harder and last longer than any traditional half-ton. As I previously wrote, electric drive units have fewer moving parts than combustion engines, which could make the Ramcharger more reliable in the long run.

$70,000 for a hybrid sounds insane—until you realize this one tows like a diesel, accelerates like a muscle truck, and drives 690 miles without stopping. If Ram had called this an “electric TRX,” nobody would blink at the price. But instead, they used the word “hybrid,” and suddenly everyone panicked. Don’t let the name fool you. The Ramcharger isn’t just another hybrid—it’s shaping up to be the future of the work truck.
