Porsche is known for manufacturing luxury vehicles with elegant designs, powerful engines, and hefty price tags. Interestingly, the German automaker also created tractors until 1963. But nowadays, among its priorities is designing EVs to compete with Tesla. One such vehicle is the all-electric Taycan. But consumers want more. And now reports indicate one of Porsche’s most popular models, the Cayenne midsize SUV, might offer an electric option soon.

Let’s take a closer look at the 2021 Porsche Cayenne, the automaker’s current EV options, and the rumors surrounding the new electric model.

The 2021 Porsche Cayenne at a glance

The 2021 Porsche Cayenne is one of the best-performing luxury midsize SUVs, making it a compelling choice for deep-pocketed consumers. The Cayenne saw a full redesign in 2019, and the results are nothing short of stunning.

The exterior features a flat yet rounded hood with sleek and modern headlights and a unique, narrow grille. The rear displays a beautiful and bright taillight bar with “Porsche” stretched across it. The dual exhaust pipes promise power and athleticism.

It’s also no surprise the Porsche Cayenne’s cabin is gorgeous and opulent, made from the finest materials. One of the most noticeable interior features is the huge 12.3-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay integration, navigation, satellite radio, and more.

But where this vehicle shines most is its engine. According to U.S. News, the base-model Cayenne packs a turbocharged 3.0-liter V6 producing up to 335 hp. Buyers can choose from three other engine options, too, all providing an extra dose of power. The top model harnesses 541 hp.

The Porsche Cayenne also comes in a hybrid option, which got a new S E-Hybrid V8 in 2020. It produces 455 hp, about 40 hp more than the prior model year’s engine.

Porsche’s EVs

Porsche offers a wide range of vehicles, from sports cars to SUVs. It also makes hybrid versions of a few of the most popular models. The Panamera 4 E-Hybrid is a beautiful plug-in hybrid sedan that looks exotic yet modern. Many people associate hybrids and EVs with ugly designs thanks to cars like the Toyota Prius. But the Panamera 4 E-Hybrid bucks that trend. The only other hybrid model that Porsche offers is the aforementioned Cayenne E-Hybrid.

As for fully electric vehicles, Porsche has only one on the market right now. The Taycan has an all-electric powertrain and is a great option for consumers who want to reduce their carbon footprint beyond what a hybrid can do.

The good news for EV enthusiasts is that the 2022 Porsche Macan will include an all-electric version, Car and Driver reports. This move seems to signal that Porsche plans to give consumers the option to purchase many of its best-sellers with all-electric powertrains soon. So, could the Porsche Cayenne be next?

Will we see an all-electric Cayenne soon?

Right now, the Cayenne is available only with standard fuel options and a plug-in hybrid option. However, Porsche might be preparing to offer an all-electric model, Autoweek reports.

The speculation follows news that Stefan Weckbach, who’s in charge of the Porsche Taycan and EV department, will lead further Cayenne development. This move appears to signal the Porsche Cayenne might soon offer an all-electric powertrain. But only time will tell.
