If you own a General Motors truck then be careful. There has been an increase in thefts. California police are warning drivers about how thieves are quickly getting away with GMC Sierra models.

California police share how thieves easily steal GMC Sierra trucks

Police officers in Bakersfield, California are warning truck owners about an increase in thefts. In particular, the GMC Sierra is being targeted as thieves hack a security system.

An undercover officer shared that criminals are using auto-diagnostic tools to start the trucks. Then they disconnect the OnStar systems so they can’t be tracked. The Chevrolet Silverado is also equipped with OnStar tech.

According to KGET, thieves punch through the glass then open the door and bypass the push button start. Reportedly, the police department believes the thefts are connected to an organized crime ring.

They’re coming for these trucks to fill their orders. The increase in theft primarily involves high-end models built between 2018 to 2023. Luxury options like the GMC Sierra AT4 and Denali are the most popular models to take.

Motor City Auto Center Chief Operating Officer, John Pitre shared that the criminals are looking to take the entire truck. They’re equipped with exotic suspension systems, wheels, and tires. Plus, they have big brakes, high-power engines, and leather interiors.

Brock Butler builds pools and his truck was stolen while left out in the open during a project. Thieves busted the door lock and ripped out the deck. Now he protects it with an aftermarket handle without a key cylinder in it.

His coworker’s truck has been taken six times in the past three months. Police officers recommend disconnecting the battery so criminals can’t start the engine.
