Detroit woman escapes police in SUV twice
Police officers in Detroit got more than expected when they noticed an SUV with an expired license plate. They turned on their lights and initiated a traffic stop.
Right away, the woman seemed defensive as officers asked for her driver’s license and vehicle registration. She called 911 and requested to meet with another officer. Backup arrived shortly after.
She was removed from the SUV and was pepper-sprayed due to failure to cooperate. Then she fought her way back into the vehicle and drove to Concord Street. Officers blocked the area with patrol cars.
Officers gave her verbal commands to stop. However, she floored in the direction of squad cars and officers. At least one police officer fired their gun. According to CBS News, others may have fired their weapons as well due to fearing for their lives.
She was shot three times. Bullets struck both her arms and one of her legs. But she drove away again! The woman ended up in the parking lot of a police training facility on Sherwood Street.
Officers then provided emergency aid until she could be transported to the hospital. She’s in stable condition.
Chief Todd Bettison shared that if you’re pulled over while driving, you must comply. By state law, you have to provide your driver’s license. There are zero opportunities to say you don’t have it during a traffic stop.
Then he explained that traffic incidents are the biggest issue in Detroit due to motorists fleeing officers, speeding, and running red lights.
