Police Issues Urgent Warning to Jersey Drivers After Stolen Kia Flips in High-Speed Pursuit

The Mantua Police Department in New Jersey ended a wild multi-vehicle pursuit after one of the suspects was involved in a rollover incident. Police called off the case after the Kia ended up on its roof, leading to the arrest of a juvenile.

According to a Mantua Police Department Instagram post, an emergency call at around 2:47 a.m. from residents of the Buckingham Village development prompted the police to dispatch multiple patrol units. The residents reported seeing four to five people checking car doors.

Police received additional calls from other residents in the same area, suggesting that this was a coordinated operation. When police patrol vehicles reached Lestershire Drive, officers spotted multiple suspects trying to break into vehicles.

Patrolman Andrew Glaser then located a Jeep Grand Cherokee that the suspects got into and fled. Police located additional stolen vehicles-a Kia and a Hyundai, leading to a multi-vehicle chase. The post read:

“Upon observing the patrol vehicle, the suspects immediately fled, entering the Jeep and attempting to escape the area. Patrolman Glaser attempted to initiate a motor vehicle stop; however, the vehicle fled toward Willingboro.

“During the response, additional stolen vehicles, including a black sedan believed to be a Hyundai and a Kia were located and also fled from officers.

“A pursuit ensued involving multiple vehicles: Patrolman Glaser pursued the Jeep and black sedan onto Route 55 North, Sgt. William Donovan pursued the Kia.”

However, the stolen Kia jumped the railroad tracks at high speed and rolled over. Police stated that the dangerous pursuit was called off in the interest of safety:

“During the pursuit, the Kia turned onto Mercer Avenue, accelerated at a high rate of speed, and jumped the railroad tracks, traveling approximately 150 feet before overturning onto its roof at the end of West Mercer Avenue.

“Following the crash, suspects fled the vehicle on foot. One juvenile suspect was located shortly thereafter in the area of West Atlantic Avenue and Grey Fox Circle and was transported to Cooper Hospital for evaluation.

“Due to the dangerous nature of the incident, the pursuit on Route 55 was terminated shortly after the crash.”

Although the chase was called off, police continue to investigate the case to nab the other suspects. However, the police want residents to make things more difficult for thieves by securing their vehicles. The post read:

“This incident remains an active and ongoing investigation, and additional information will be released as it becomes available.

“Reminder to Residents: Lock your vehicles. Remove valuables. Do not make it easy for these crews.”
