My goodness, it has to be embarrassing to attend driving school as a police chief. Not only do officers have tons of training behind the wheel, but they know all of the laws. But the chief was caught by one of his officers speeding well above the limit.

Police chief forced to attend driving school due to speeding

Early in February, a police chief in Richmond, Virginia, received a speeding ticket for the first time in over 30 years. To make things worse, one of his own police officers pulled him over.

While heading to a meeting in his police cruiser, Police Chief, Rick Edwards was clocked going 61 mpg in a 35 mph zone. Because he was going more than 20 mph over the limit, it was considered to be reckless driving.

Edwards was honest and shared that he wasn’t responding to an emergency. This would allow him to get off without any penalties as a police officer.

He had to pay a $87 court fine and was ordered to attend an eight-hour driving course for $75. According to Axios, he paid with his own money.

Edwards pleaded guilty in court and finished the driving school course early, which got his reckless driving charge dropped. Up until this incident, he had a spotless driving record.

But there is good news for Virginia drivers. Edwards presented that traffic fatalities dropped by 32% in 2024. The city has been safer and he probably learned from his mistake. Remember, if you’re late for a meeting, speeding can make things much worse.
