Georgia truck driver caught with 45 lbs of marijuana
58-year-old David Lee Johnson and 53-year-old Brenda Jean Lucas of Limestone County, Georgia, were arrested for trafficking cannabis. Johnson is a truck driver that officers have suspected of using his semi-truck to bring marijuana in from other states for weeks.
Narcotics investigators with the Athens Police Department launched an official investigation into Johnson about a month ago. According to WHNT, they finally got a warrant to search his home on Wale Road and made shocking discoveries.
The trucker was holding 45 lbs of marijuana, 656 consumable THC products, eight long guns, six pistols, and $2,542 in United States currency. The couple was released after posting a $100,000 bond.
It’s unclear where the trucker was picking up the contraband. But there is an ongoing investigation into the matter. Semi-trucks are often used as a way to transport drugs and illegal materials across state lines and the border.
Marijuana can have a street value of roughly $1,761 per pound. But the value depends on how it’s distributed and the quality of the product. While THC is illegal in Georgia, medical use is legal in Alabama.
Overall, cannabis is legal in 39 out of 50 states for medical use. It’s legal for recreational use in 24 states. However, truckers aren’t allowed to partake.
