On October 31, the Pheonix Police Department responded to an emergency far from anything expected on Beggars’ Night. Eyewitnesses called dispatch after watching a man drive his car into a pool. Phoenix PD released footage of the rescue on their Facebook page, and you can watch it below.

Based on the date stamp in the footage, it was a bit after 2 am on Halloween morning. Police arrive to find a white vehicle fully submerged in the pool. As one officer approaches, he says he’s trying to see if anyone’s inside the car.

While it’s difficult to tell how many officers were on the scene, the footage cuts to one standing on the vehicle’s roof while another holds a flashlight pointing at the car. The officer in the pool grips a crowbar, positions himself to strike the sunroof, and breaks the roof glass.

Immediately, the occupant reaches out of the water.

The police officer helps the driver out of the car, who’s wearing a high-visibility vest.

Once the driver is sitting out of the broken sunroof, the officers quickly ask if anyone else is in the car. No, the driver asserts, it’s just him.

The Phoenix PD said the driver was taken to the hospital. When asked how the accident happened, the driver told police he erroneously hit the gas pedal too hard.

Sources say that it takes anywhere from 30 to 120 seconds for a car to sink once it hits a body of water. Depending on how quickly the department responded, the driver was likely trapped underwater for several minutes. He’s certainly lucky to be alive.

If the driver carries proper auto insurance, the incident should be taken care of under a full coverage policy, including any damage to the pool or surrounding gate. The vehicle is obviously totaled.
