You may have noticed that youths like to engage in dangerous challenges and trends such as eating Tide pods. However, things are escalating as incredibly fast electric scooters enter the market. People are riding them on the highway at speeds around 80 mph!

Not to be an old, grumpy grandma over here, but I’ve noticed that there is an increasing trend among youths using electric scooters on the highways. One young man has been riding around Asheville, North Carolina, without a helmet.

Plus, videos are popping up with scooter riders weaving around traffic on busy Georgia and Texas interstates. Two-wheeled eScooters can reach speeds of up to 100 mph and only cost between $1,000 – $6,000. With a range of roughly 100 miles, they’re tempting.

While they can be driven as fast as cars, they aren’t as safe. They also aren’t as expensive, don’t require insurance, and don’t have to be registered with the DMV.

Some states have pretty loose laws about motorized scooters, too. According to Levy Electric, you can ride them on public roads in North Carolina in areas with speed limits under 25 mph. Individuals under 16 aren’t required to wear helmets.

With names like ‘Roadster,’ they probably seem safe to the underdeveloped brain of a youth. But one bad pothole or sudden stop could go beyond knocking some sense into them, because they might not get back up.

While electric scooters could be a good solution to motor around cities or college campuses, every time I see one on the highway, I feel sick and worried about the rider’s safety.
