Owners of the 2020 Ford F-150 Have Plenty to Rant About

No one knows more about their trucks than the actual owners. That’s why we’re listing to what drivers of the 2020 Ford F-150 have to say. While the 2020 Ford F-150 is a great option to consider, there are a few things that send owners into rants.

For a bit of background information, the 2020 Ford F-150 feels a little behind competitors like the 2022 Ram 1500, which had a recent remodel. The F-150 was redesigned in 2015 then received a refresh in 2018. 

The F-150 has six engine options for the 2020 model year: 

  • 3.3-liter V6 with 290 hp 
  • 2.7-liter turbocharged V6 with 325 hp 
  • 5.0-liter V8 with 395 hp 
  • 3.0-liter turbo-diesel V6 with 250 hp 
  • 3.5-liter EcoBoost V6 with 375 hp 

Most of the powertrain options are paired with a 10-speed automatic transmission. The 3.3-liter engine is paired with a six-speed automatic transmission. The 2020 F-150 can tow up to 13,200 lbs and carry a payload of up to 1,200 lbs. 

What F-150 owners rant about 

According to Cars.com, owners of the 2020 Ford F-150 rant about the transmission. Despite having a decent gas mileage and quiet ride, the 10-speed transmission struggles to find the right heart. 

Common issues include rough shifts a reluctance to downshift. Some drivers complain about it stuttering and jerking. Warming it up on a summer day before hitting the highway or using the Sport mode can help. 

The F-150 burns through oil

Another issue involves burning through oil. Some Ford F-150 models with the 5.0-liter V8 noticed that their trucks had an oil consumption problem. Ford did issue a technical service bulletin about the issue that includes service recommendations. 

The affected trucks have an excessive oil consumption of greater than one quart in 3,000 miles with no visible oil leaks. But one owner experienced 1.5 quarts per 1,000 miles. Another driver used 1.5 quarts for the first 5,000 miles. 

Ford Recommends reprogramming the powertrain control module, caning the oil and oil filter, and installing a new dipstick. There wasn’t a recall for this issue, but a class-action lawsuit against Ford was filed. It claims that the defect can cause unexpected engine stalling and engine failure. 

The F-150 Start-Stop system is annoying 

Owners complain about the auto stop-start system in the 2020 Ford F-150 is annoying. This feature was added to each model in 2018 to improve its fuel efficiency. But some owners say that the system causes a rough restart that’s not worth it. It can make the entire cab shake. 

The good news is that there is a button to disable it. The bad news is that you have to press it every time you enter the truck. Drivers wish that there was a software setting or positive set button to save their preferences. 

These issues don’t seem like dealbreakers, and there are plenty of great things to say abou the 2020 Ford F-150 too. For example, the interior is incredibly spacious, the fuel economy is excellent, and it’s excellent for towing.
