Pickup trucks are not a one-size-fits-all situation. Compact pickup trucks need enough room to carry everything needed for work while still fitting in a standard parking spot. Which new pickup trucks for 2022 impressed the experts at Consumer Reports? The 2022 Ford Ranger, Honda Ridgeline, and Ford Maverick, of course.
The Ford Ranger is a compact pickup truck recommended by Consumer Reports
Consumer Reports tested the 2022 Ford Ranger compact pickup truck to ensure it had what buyers needed. The Ranger is one of the classic trucks in Ford’s lineup, but it often gets overshadowed by the full-size F-150. The compact nature of the pickup truck makes the Ranger a bit more maneuverable and easy to drive.
The 2022 Ranger comes equipped with safety features like forward-collision warning (FCW) and automatic emergency braking (AEB). More driver-assist features are available but not included as standard. The Ranger can tow 7,500 pounds and managed to get 20 mpg overall during testing.
Starting price: $25,715 – $39,465
The Honda Ridgeline is another compact pickup truck recommended by the experts
The 2022 Honda Ridgeline compact pickup truck came in first out of nine similar trucks. The experts found that the Ridgeline was reliable, and owners seemed pleased with the truck within the first year of ownership. The cabin inside is quiet and well-finished, while the ride is comfortable. That’s because the Ridgeline is more of an SUV with a truck bed than a regular truck.
FCW, AEB, and lane departure warning (LDW) are all standard for this year. The 2022 Honda Ridgeline has a 5,000-pound towing capacity, which won’t fit the needs of all buyers, but it is enough for some. The Ridgeline returned 20 mpg overall during testing.
Starting price: $38,140 – $45,570
Don’t forget everyone’s new favorite, the Ford Maverick
The 2022 Ford Maverick hit the scene this year and hasn’t slowed down yet. It managed to snag second place on Consumer Reports’ list of best compact pickup trucks for 2022. One of the most significant selling points for the Ford Maverick compact truck is the price, starting at just under $20,000 for the bare-bones version. Buyers can customize the truck in a variety of ways and still stay within budget.
FCW and AEB are standard for this year, but the rest of the driver assistance features are only optional. This compact truck can tow 4,000 pounds, which is enough for most people. The Maverick returned 23 mpg overall during testing.
Starting price: $19,995 – $25,860
There are many other compact pickup trucks on this Consumer Reports list, but not all qualified for the “recommended label.” With so many trucks receiving redesigns this year, perhaps it was just an off-year for other makes and models. With that said, a popular truck is more likely to receive a price bump due to its popularity.
