Toyota is a pioneer in hybrid technology. The automaker produces several hybrid nameplates for different segments. Some of its hybrid vehicles are among the most popular hybrids on the market. The Japanese brand produces a small hybrid SUV, a midsize hybrid SUV, and now, it has a full-size hybrid SUV.

The 2023 Toyota Sequoia is a redesigned model. The Sequoia desperately needed a redesign for the last few years. Now, it’s finally keeping up with the times thanks to its new standard hybrid powertrain. The Sequoia’s hybrid system allows the full-size SUV to get better gas mileage without sacrificing any power. Like the redesigned Tundra, the hybrid version of the SUV actually has a higher output than previous gas versions.

Toyota no longer has to rely on thirsty V8 engines to deliver the power that consumers expect from its larger nameplates. The redesigned Sequoia is objectively an improvement using just about every metric. The 2023 Toyota Sequoia is the brand’s only full-size SUV nameplate following the discontinuation of the Land Cruiser. So, Toyota’s only full-size SUV is a standard hybrid.

The 2023 Toyota Sequoia comes in five different trim levels: the SR5, Limited, Platinum, Capstone, and TRD Pro. The full-size SUV ranges from $58,365-$76,065.

Toyota’s full-size SUV option certainly isn’t cheap, but it’s built to last. Expect a new Sequoia to last for at least 200,000 miles or 14 years based on the national average annual driving distance. The average new vehicle ownership period is only about 8.4 years. The Sequoia could easily double that if well-maintained. It’s also in the same price range as popular full-size SUVs like the Chevy Tahoe and Jeep Wagoneer. So, the 2023 Sequoia isn’t as pricey as it initially seems.

Car and Driver recommends the Sequoia Limited trim because it has superior creature comforts to the base model without breaking the bank. It comes with heated and ventilated front seats and a larger infotainment system than the base model.

Ultimately, the Sequoia SR5 makes more sense if you can forego the niceties of the Limited model. The Sequoia’s strengths were never in the comfort of its cabin in the first place.

The 2023 Toyota Sequoia is praised for its quiet cabin, attractive new design language, and improved fuel economy. It uses a 3.4-liter twin-turbocharged V6 engine and an electric motor to make 437 horsepower and 583 lb-ft of torque. The Sequoia gets 21 miles per gallon in the city and 24 miles per gallon on the highway. That’s a significant improvement from its previous 15 miles per gallon combined.

The new Sequoia is more efficient and more powerful than ever before, but that doesn’t mean that it’s the best full-size SUV option for the money. It’s a competitor, but rivals like the Chevrolet Tahoe and GMC Yukon still run the segment.
