Only 1 Full-Size Pickup Truck Is Made in Texas

American-made doesn’t mean what it used to: many Chevy Silverado 1500s and GMC Sierra 1500s are assembled in Mexico, as is Ram’s entire heavy-duty trucks lineup. And while the F-150 is assembled in the U.S., at least 45% of its parts are manufactured abroad. But one full-size 2022 pickup truck is proudly built in Texas: the Toyota Tundra.

Where will the 2022 Toyota Tundra be built?

Toyota has been assembling its Tundra pickup truck in its San Antonio Texas plant since 2006–and the 2022 model will be no different. Toyota San Antonio is a 2,000-acre property housing many suppliers that build components for the Tundra, in addition to the factory where the truck’s assembled.

Toyota takes pride in its Texas connection. Its Texas campus is built on the grounds of a ranch that was founded in 1794. This date is what gives the Western-themed Tundra 1794 Edition its name.

Is the Toyota Tundra the most American-made pickup truck?

The folks at Cars.com consider the Tundra the most American-made pickup truck because most of its components are manufactured in the U.S. But the experts at Kogod School of Business argue that because Toyota is headquartered in Japan, more dollars of an F-150 purchase stay in the U.S.

It’s hard to measure just how “American-made” a vehicle is. The American Automobile Labeling Act forces automakers to display the location of assembly and percentage of parts manufactured in the U.S./Canada.

No one disagrees that Toyota not only assembles the Tundra in the U.S., but it boasts the highest percentage of U.S./Canada-made parts of any full-size truck. This is why it was the only full-size pickup truck to land on Cars.com‘s top 12 American-made list.

But the Kogod School of Business at the American University of Washington D.C. maintains a ranking in a slightly different way. Instead of tracking where the parts of your truck come from, they track where the dollars of your purchase go. Because Toyota is headquartered in Japan, Kogod assumes 3% of the purchase price goes to Japan for research and 6% goes to Japan as profit.

If you use the Kogod method, the Ford F-150 scratches out a victory above the Toyota Tundra as the most American-made full-size pickup truck that your money can buy. Any way you score it, every other full-size pickup truck comes in behind the Tundra.

What vehicles does Toyota build in San Antonio?

For years, Toyota built its Tundra and Tacoma pickup trucks in San Antonio. But as Tacoma demand rises, the company has moved some of that production south to Mexico. Because the 2023 Toyota Sequoia will be closely related to the new Tundra, Toyota is moving its production to San Antonio too.

Both the 2022 Toyota Tundra and the 2023 Toyota Sequoia ride on the Toyota New Global Architecture Full-Frame (TNGA-F). Toyota originally built this chassis for its Land Cruiser 300 series.

The new Tundra chassis’ advanced technology includes a fully-boxed frame and composite bed to save weight. It also features coil springs, both front and rear. Like Toyota’s other full-frame vehicles around the globe, the 2022 Tundra is dropping its naturally-aspirated V8 in favor of a twin-turbocharged V6.
