As the critics weigh in on the latest 2021 model vehicles, there’s one distinction every automaker hopes its flagship vehicles earn. Consumer Reports evaluates new rides at every level and touch point before ultimately deciding whether or not it’s worthy of the organization’s recommendation.
Cadillac has one model earning the official Consumer Reports nod this year. It’s the only model in the luxury lineup to earn such a recommendation, at least for now. It’s a pretty impressive accomplishment and suggests if you have a luxury SUV in mind, this Cadillac is worth a look.
This is the only Cadillac to get the Consumer Reports endorsement
When Consumer Reports recommends a model, it does so by compiling an overall score based on a host of factors. Only those that perform well in road testing, achieve a high owner satisfaction, score highly in predicted reliability, and rate well in crash tests get the “recommended” badge.
For 2021, with its many improvements, the Cadillac XT5 achieves such a status. Overall, the SUV earns a score of 74 out of 100, and the Consumer Reports teams suggest the highest luxury trim, complete with navigation and Bose stereo, as the best version to buy.
There is plenty to like about the XT5, and Consumer Reports points out a few key aspects, lending to the overall recommendation. Fuel economy is likely to improve with the nine-speed automatic transmission. And the turbocharged four-cylinder engine delivers more pep than even the V6 variation.
Why this recommendation is significant
General Motors tends to design its luxury lines with an almost edgy style and plush interior components. Consumer Reports says the 2021 fleet of Cadillacs is focusing more on agility and handling, including the Cadillac XT5.
Other critics, including Car and Driver, point out how easy it is to get in and out of this crossover. Some of the other improvements include new safety aids, like the Super Cruise driver assistance feature, which Consumer Reports says is among the best.
The 2021 Cadillac XT5 earning this recommendation is significant because, in most cases, the automaker doesn’t quite bring the sophistication that its competitors do, at least according to Consumer Reports.
Reliability is still an unknown factor for most of these overhauled vehicles, as well. Despite the challenging vehicle segment, with the likes of BMW and Mercedes-Benz, the XT5 earning this acknowledgment is a pretty big deal.
But what about the Cadillac Escalade?
Another Cadillac favorite got a redesign for 2021. And critics and consumers alike are excited about the new Cadillac Escalade. For now, Consumer Reports doesn’t list it with the recommended distinction.
But it’s only because the team hasn’t fully tested the behemoth SUV just yet. The verdict is still out on the Escalade, and it could ultimately score well enough to rank highly with its XT5 cousin.
Why the Cadillac XT5 stands out in a crowded segment
There’s plenty to love about the 2021 Cadillac XT5, and Consumer Reports lays out a few really great attributes. The team is impressed by the quiet cabin, firm ride, and solid feel in the turns.
The front and rear seats are supple and “superbly comfortable,” and the interior is “impeccably finished.” The systems are user-friendly both Android, and Apple connectivity options are wireless this year. Edmunds applauds the XT5’s stylish appearance and sizable cargo area, as well.
While the official vehicle score and verdict may still be out on the Cadillac Escalade, it’s clear Consumer Reports stands behind the 2021 Cadillac XT5. It checks all the boxes and performs well in almost every category. If you want a luxury crossover experience that the critics recommend, the XT5 is definitely worth a test drive.
