Nissan is recalling 443,899 vehicles in the U.S. It’s all due to an internal defect that could cause engines to fail while driving.
The issue affects several models across both the Nissan and Infiniti brands, according to a recall notice filed with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration on June 27.
The recall, filed under Campaign Number 25V437000, covers certain 2019 to 2024 models
Model | Year Range |
Nissan Rogue | 2021-2024 |
Nissan Altima | 2019-2020 |
Infiniti QX50 | 2019-2022 |
Infiniti QX55 | 2022 |
All are equipped with Nissan’s variable compression turbo engines: either the 3-cylinder 1.5-liter (just the Rogue) or the 4-cylinder 2.0-liter VC-Turbo.
The automaker said a manufacturing defect in the engine bearings or related components can lead to internal engine damage. If those bearings fail, the engine can seize, which may cut off power without warning. That loss of motive power raises the risk of a car accident.
Nissan explained that these bearing failures don’t usually happen all at once. Instead, the damage tends to build over time. Drivers might notice unusual engine noises, rough running, warning lights on the dash, or messages in the instrument cluster before a failure occurs.
To fix the issue, Nissan dealers will inspect the oil pan for metal shavings
If they find debris, they’ll either repair or replace the engine at no cost to the owner. Even if there’s no damage, vehicles will still get fresh oil and other updates. For some models, the engine control software will also be reprogrammed.
Nissan plans to notify affected owners by mail starting August 25. Anyone with questions can call Nissan or Infiniti customer service, or read the NHTSA campaign information.
