The Nissan Maxima is the brand’s flagship sedan, but its popularity hasn’t been the strongest in recent years. Large, expensive, gas-guzzling sedans like the Toyota Avalon, Chrysler 300, and Dodge Charger are slowly being killed off—the public just isn’t interested anymore. Rumors have been swirling for years that the 2022 Nissan Maxima will be discontinued. Will it be the last in the line?

Is Nissan discontinuing its Maxima flagship sedan?

Automotive News has reported on this large sedan, but thus far, there is no solid word on whether the Nissan Maxima is getting discontinued. Other outlets debated this question back in 2020 when the rumors first started to flow. But, with no official word from Nissan, the continuing rumors remain only that.

It’s true that the Maxima falls short in many areas, and the segment of large sedans is shrinking every year. Auto News claims that, at one point, experts expected that Nissan would replace the Maxima with a new, electric flagship car. But, it says, “that plan could now be on hold, according to a source familiar with the matter.”

With a noticeable lack of 2023 Nissan Maxima spy shots, it’s hard to know what the company has in mind for the future.

Will the Maxima be redesigned for 2023?

If this sedan is not discontinued, then it would stand to reason that the upcoming 2023 Maxima or 2024 Maxima would receive a total makeover.

Fans and critics had wondered if there would be a Maxima redesign in 2022, but all we saw was a few brief updates. The cheapest Maxima sedan saw a minor price increase, and the top-level trim, the Maxima Platinum, added one new standard feature.

According to Auto News, the Maxima sedan is due to be replaced this coming year. However, there is a chance that Nissan may wait to release a redesigned Maxima the same year that it may roll out a redesigned Murano, LEAF, and Kicks.

2023 Nissan Maxima release date: when will the new sedan come out?

We’re already nearly halfway through 2022 with no word on a new Maxima. It’s rare for automakers to wait until the actual model’s year to release a new variant. So, we’d expect that if Nissan were releasing a 2023 Maxima, it would happen within the next few months.

However, at this time, we don’t have any details about a 2023 Nissan Maxima release date. This may indicate that the luxury Nissan car will be discontinued at the end of this year. But if Nissan doesn’t have plans to redesign and release its fully loaded flagship sedan, what will replace the Maxima?

AutoNews wrote that “the flagship sedan was expected to be replaced with an electric vehicle inspired by the IMs ‘elevated sports sedan’ concept.”

The Nissan brand has discontinued several models over the years, including:

  • NV200 Compact Cargo Van
  • NV Cargo Van
  • NV Passenger Van
  • Pathfinder Hybrid
  • 370Z Roadster
  • Sentra NISMO
  • Titan XD Diesel pickup truck
  • Versa Note
  • Altima Coupe
  • NV200 Taxi
  • Cube
  • Murano Crosscabriolet
  • Quest minivan
  • Xterra
  • JUKE

Unlike other brands, which seem to have a consistent strategy in which models they kill off—the cheapest or most expensive, only small passenger cars, only those with poor fuel economy, etc.—Nissan’s list of retired cars runs the gauntlet. Minivans, hatchbacks, crossovers, cargo vans, and various toaster-shaped box cars all made the list.

Because of this, it wouldn’t be surprising to see if the large sedan joins the ranks of the deceased. But, in this case, no news is good news for the Maxima. We’ll just need to wait if the Nissan Maxima is discontinued this year.
