A recent trend in the SUV market has emerged, and it’s one that some might find a bit strange. Automakers are releasing special edition versions of their SUVs with specifically unique features and styling, often at a higher price point. One such example is the new Volkswagen Atlas Peak Edition, which aims to stand out in a crowded SUV market. However, is this trend of releasing special edition SUVs worth the extra cost, or is it just a marketing ploy to attract buyers? We’ll look closer at the Volkswagen Atlas Peak Edition and what it brings to the table.

According to Car and Driver, the 2024 Volkswagen Atlas Peak Edition has a turbocharged four-cylinder engine that produces 269 horsepower and 273 lb-feet of torque, paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission. The VW Atlas comes with either front-wheel or all-wheel drive options, allowing for added versatility. Additionally, its towing capacity of 5,000 pounds is sure to please anyone who needs to haul something heavy.

Inside, the Atlas continues to impress, with plenty of room for passengers and cargo. The easy-to-use control layout is paired with a massive 12.0-inch infotainment screen, allowing drivers to stay connected. A heated steering wheel and ventilated front seats are standard in the Peak Edition, ensuring the driver’s comfort in any weather conditions.

One unique feature of any Atlas is the overabundance of cup holders, making it the perfect family car or road trip companion. The third row of seats adds even more versatility, making transporting up to seven passengers easy. The Atlas also comes equipped with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto capability, ensuring drivers can stay connected with their smartphones while on the road. Finally, the wireless phone charging capability is a nice touch, eliminating the need for pesky cords and cables.

The 2024 VW Atlas Peak Edition is a refined interpretation of the Basecamp Concept

The 2024 Volkswagen Atlas Peak Edition has been designed to give off a rugged and off-road-friendly look, but it is primarily just an appearance package. The Atlas Peak Edition takes inspiration from the Atlas Basecamp concept from 2019 but is more of a refined version of the idea. The SUV is equipped with unique 18-inch black wheels and all-terrain tires, giving it a more aggressive and adventurous look. The silver-colored lower bumper and body-side moldings also add to the SUV’s toughness and durability.

Inside, the Peak Edition badge can be found on the steering wheel, and the cabin features black faux-leather upholstery with gray and orange accents and a backlit dashboard with Peak Edition branding. The Avocado Green and Pure Gray colors are exclusive to the Peak Edition, setting it apart from the rest of the Atlas lineup.

The exterior of the Peak Edition is also enhanced with a few blacked-out details, such as the trim around the windows, mirror caps, and roof rails, giving the SUV a sleek and modern look. Additionally, the illuminated VW logo adds a touch of class to the exterior design. Although the VW Atlas Peak Edition is primarily an appearance package, it still offers all-wheel drive as standard, unlike other Atlas models. This means that the SUV can handle tougher road conditions and terrains.

The rugged appearance trend in SUVs

The 2024 Volkswagen Atlas Peak Edition is just one example of a growing trend among SUVs, where they try to appear more rugged and off-road capable but are essentially the same crossovers in practice. Automakers cater to consumers who want the appearance of a rugged SUV but don’t necessarily need the capabilities that come with a proper off-road vehicle. You can see this with the Mazda CX-50, the Kia Sportage X-Pro, and the GMC Terrain. This trend is becoming increasingly popular as SUVs dominate the market and automakers find ways to differentiate their models from the competition.
